I'm really dissapointed in where Slickdeals has ended up

2,193 1,080 January 29, 2026 at 03:20 PM in Other
When I discovered this site it was a bunch of people hunting deals and sharing them, it feels like those days are gone and it's turned into a place for generic Amazon products to be pushed by the staff. I used to refer people here every chance I got, it was a great place, I hate to see what it's become. New accounts created to push junk products and write fake reviews here just make it that much worse. It may be making more profits now, but I feel it's going to hurt the site in the long run.

Once upon a time, long ago and far away, The Lounge forum was quite a busy place. One of the more fun activities was creating 'spoof threads' which appeared almost exactly like a legitimate thread, all the way up to and including the thread title. But the thread contents were quite different, and intentionally (and sometimes slyly) humorous. Spoof threads often lived longer than the original thread which they spoofed, owing to their humorous nature, which is one core philosophy of The Lounge.

Because of this, a punning individual once named Mark created SPAST, the Society for the Promotion and Advancement of Spoof Threads. SPAST would approve and promote these spoof threads in The Lounge, and a great bit of fun was had by all.

A lot of this isn't the fault of this site. Amazon has gradually become the leader in e-commerce
- to the extent that with most other sites, shipping makes shopping elsewhere pointless.

With fewer brick and mortar stores, the monopoly of Amazon, Target, and Walmart on
both retail and e-commerce, there just aren't as many deals. The quality will continue to get
worse too. It's just a sign of the times. I miss the great in store deals and freebies and having
survey companies send cash in the mail, but things have been changing for awhile. Time to
look ahead and not back.
I still only shop with Amazon when (more like IF) I can't find the same thing in a brick and mortar store. Even when I do shop with them or one of their associated companies (i.e. Woot, etc) it's usually only when they offer me a free Prime trial to save on the shipping costs.

As for Walmart and Target they both have their moments, like when they both do their annual electronics/gaming clearance. Unfortunately both of these companies are YMMV and on a store by store basis. Not to mention that Target has nerfed their rewards program to where its abysmal most times with the only redeeming times being when the promotions stack.

The main reason I stay with Amazon, is that I can always find something in my price range
because I tend to have a very limited budget. Write reviews, get accepted to Vine, and it's
even more worthwhile. Wink

Every single time I've been anywhere near a Target store in the last 5 years, every item they
have is always more expensive than Amazon, and it's the same cheap crap from China. The
price gap is going to become even more significant because Amazon is moving towards all
robotics warehouses. They already have one in Louisiana. When you don't have to pay
employees, your locations and overhead is cheaper, and no one falls behind or needs a sick
day - Amazon will be continue to be able to offer lower prices.

A lot of people don't realize how inexpensive some of the robotics systems are. I think the
one that flips hamburgers that came out about a decade ago and that some fast food
franchises hired, was about 3k, which was a lot less hassle than a human being. A robot
is never tardy or rude, doesn't require health insurance (in my state fast food has to), they
won't file lawsuits, etc.

That's part of the problem to me though is that companies treat employees like a number and expect them to do the work of 3-4 people for the pay of one. Amazon (and CVS/Caremark) have quotas that employees must maintain. When I first started working places that did that called it piece rate and you WERE paid more for hustling.

These multi billion dollar corporations don't need all the money that they hoard and use to buy up all the competition until they have a virtual monopoly. Unfortunately the other side of the coin is that far, far too many people willingly work under such conditions because like most of us they need a job to make some money to (barely) live on.

As for the prices, for the things I typically shop for I still find better deals in actual brick and mortar stores rather than shopping with Amazon. Though I will say that I did just pick up a new mattress and platform for it from Woot for a hair under $200 total. I'm probably waiting for the weekend to unbox the mattress in a box but may assemble the platform for it by Friday so I can throw my old box spring out for trash day. In this instance it was more convenient and cheaper than buying from a B&M store but usually it's not.

Thanks. For as much as I hate to admit it I definitely needed a new bed. Though it will be weird getting used to the bigger mattress as I currently have a full size one and this one is a queen.
