Am I reading this right where the distance between lights is 3-1/2ft? That's the height of a small child!

Yes, but people get all bent out of shape and start calling guys with other colors of lights on their cars when you string 120' worth of kids across your yard from tree to tree, so this is a viable alternative. 30 lights spread over 120' is not ideal for a porch but could be useful for a path, sidewalk, or crossing a yard I suppose.
