Finally settled on November 2025, which is quite recent. Pretty good for a cheap tablet.

This 12.1 inch Onn Pro tablet stands out as a cheap Helio G99 Android 14 slate with a bright, sharp screen and a sturdier, more premium feel than Fire tablets. It handles streaming, browsing, reading, and light gaming well, with 6GB of physical RAM, microSD expansion, Wi Fi 6, and removable bloatware. The main drawbacks are no headphone jack, USB C 2.0 with no video out, and open box condition that can range from spotless to beat up. Some units also show flicker, brightness quirks, Wi Fi instability, or slow updates, so it is best suited to light everyday use.

Common Questions (8)

  • Some units show flicker or stepwise brightness changes, especially in low light or at low brightness, and it can happen even with auto-brightness off. A developer-option workaround that disables HW overlays may reduce it, and some units stop flickering after updates.

    xxxzJgayda666discman017xxxz

  • The tablet has been reported updating through Android 14 with security updates into late 2025, but there is no confirmation it will reach Android 15. Update installs can be slow and may take hours on some units.

    ShrewdGame6872djbillsJgayda666discman017

  • Most units work normally, but some have trouble with certain networks, hidden SSIDs, or mesh roaming and may need Wi‑Fi toggled off and on or a router reset. Other users report fast, stable Wi‑Fi on different networks, so the issue appears network-dependent on some devices.

    TodayOnlyimdaman99discman017imdaman99

  • It uses a Helio G99 with 6GB physical RAM and is described as roughly A9+ speed, with performance close to other midrange tablets. It handles browsing, media, and streaming well, but it is not meant for heavy tasks or as a main computer.

    joshuaNHcyberchojoshuaNHNurgle

  • A rigid case is recommended because the tablet can flex, and several users had trouble finding a hard shell that covers both front and back. A magnetic-latch case that wakes/sleeps the screen and matte screen protectors were specifically recommended.

    npolitejoshuaNHdiscman017discman017

  • No 3.5 mm headphone jack is included. A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter can be used instead if wired headphones are needed.

    npoliteechipjottectjottect

  • The onboard storage cannot be upgraded internally. Storage expansion is via microSD only, and users have reported using cards from 128GB up to 512GB and possibly larger.

    npolitePeerless_WarriorNurglejottect

  • Video playback is mixed: AVI and MP4 generally play fine, while MKV can fail in some apps unless the player has the right codec or the files are stored locally. Some users also reported playback stopping after 5-15 minutes in multiple players.

The only issue I see is...
other consumers who have complained online that their Onn tablet's touchscreen broke or stopped working relatively soon after purchase. Most likely due to bending it too much because the tablet itself is too flexible. THE DEFECT WITH THIS MODEL... GOOGLE IT!!!

This is why they say is to buy a ridged case.

Did you get a chance to try bluetooth headphones for a while? That connectivity will be key for my main use of movies on long Intl plane flights for me..

I tried a set of older airpods as well as a set of older razr bluetooth earbuds while I was giving
Xbox Xcloud atry and didn't notice any issues.
FWIW the Xbox controller was also connected via bluetooth at the same time.

what is your opinion on this tablet ?
I have the 11" pro with the same g99 processor and 4gb ram (purchased 4-'24 $80). Great tablet for the money, no bloat other than the walmart app (not really bloat) which is uninstallable. It's plenty fast enough for what I do with it (Cdisplay, Moon Reader, web browsing, newsreader, social media, playing local videos, etc.)

It's got an SD card slot (I have a 512gb in it) which is becoming rarer and rarer.

Battery life is great, I can easily get 16+ hours SOT. Charging is only 20w, but tolerable. USB-C.

I liked it enough to get the 8" 2024 model, as a smaller more packable ereader--
on sale for $36, it's slightly slower (MT8786 3gb), but it feels pretty close since the res is only 800x1280.

Both have a premium feel with aluminum body.

Rec'd mine today. Looked good - as others have said, fingerprints and half a charge but otherwise looks new. However, being super slow to update. Going month by month here with android updates since 2025. If it goes to lock screen while chugging to find the next one, I have to repeat the "look for updates" button. Then it finally downloads and installs, and takes it's sweet time with an "optimizing" step. This takes forever - so bad that I downloaded CPDT just to make sure the internal ssd wasn't bad. It was fine, but we are not off to a great start. Am loving the screen and size though - maybe if it's dog slow I won't care because it looks so good.

Mine took about 3-4 hours to update fully.

This 12.1 2024 model is orders of magnitude better than the 2023 11 inch. The screen/ram/processor are just different leagues better
This 12.1" (2024) and the 11" pro (2023) have the same CPU Helio G99.

Tried a very basic pair of Bluetooth headphones. Seemed fine. Audio sync was aligned with a YouTube video. Didn't do an extended test.

Actually, it keeps updating. Up to Android 14 and July 2025 now. Keeps going like 1-3 months at a time

I messaged VIP to see if they would price adjust but not hoping for much.
They told me:
> For a price match to be applied, the item must be listed under the exact same product listing and must also be in stock at the time of the request. To help us verify this, please also send us the link to the listing you are referring to.

Sent them the link and a screenshot when it was still in stock. Will see what they say.
