This 12.1 inch Onn Pro tablet stands out as a cheap Helio G99 Android 14 slate with a bright, sharp screen and a sturdier, more premium feel than Fire tablets. It handles streaming, browsing, reading, and light gaming well, with 6GB of physical RAM, microSD expansion, Wi Fi 6, and removable bloatware. The main drawbacks are no headphone jack, USB C 2.0 with no video out, and open box condition that can range from spotless to beat up. Some units also show flicker, brightness quirks, Wi Fi instability, or slow updates, so it is best suited to light everyday use.

Common Questions (8)

  • Some units show flicker or stepwise brightness changes, especially in low light or at low brightness, and it can happen even with auto-brightness off. A developer-option workaround that disables HW overlays may reduce it, and some units stop flickering after updates.

  • The tablet has been reported updating through Android 14 with security updates into late 2025, but there is no confirmation it will reach Android 15. Update installs can be slow and may take hours on some units.

  • Most units work normally, but some have trouble with certain networks, hidden SSIDs, or mesh roaming and may need Wi‑Fi toggled off and on or a router reset. Other users report fast, stable Wi‑Fi on different networks, so the issue appears network-dependent on some devices.

  • It uses a Helio G99 with 6GB physical RAM and is described as roughly A9+ speed, with performance close to other midrange tablets. It handles browsing, media, and streaming well, but it is not meant for heavy tasks or as a main computer.

  • A rigid case is recommended because the tablet can flex, and several users had trouble finding a hard shell that covers both front and back. A magnetic-latch case that wakes/sleeps the screen and matte screen protectors were specifically recommended.

  • No 3.5 mm headphone jack is included. A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter can be used instead if wired headphones are needed.

  • The onboard storage cannot be upgraded internally. Storage expansion is via microSD only, and users have reported using cards from 128GB up to 512GB and possibly larger.

  • Video playback is mixed: AVI and MP4 generally play fine, while MKV can fail in some apps unless the player has the right codec or the files are stored locally. Some users also reported playback stopping after 5-15 minutes in multiple players.

Is it due to Walmart based restrictions that not allow special competitors apps install on this tablet? For shopping apps, they will lower the system requirements to ease customers normally.
Yes, possibly. I know that you cannot buy Amazon gift cards at Walmart either.

Never thought a company could exclude another's Apk from a third party App store. I guess they do it all the time, just like Coke & Pepsi. Wink

Liking the tablet so far. Not 100% sure I will keep it. The 2 primary negatives FOR ME:

For my use, 10 - 11 inch would definitely be preferable.
Being relatively sure it won't ever update to 15.

I've started looking into rooting and GSIs, but, what I read so far it seems somewhat risky on this device. Haven't done ROM replacement since the height of lineage etal so not sure how well they get truly optimized to each device anymore.

Nice, snappy tablet for the price.

I did have flickering before applying any updates. Thankfully that went away after updates were installed.
I did have another issue with brightness changing slightly as I scrolled web pages (Auto Brightness turned off)
It wasn't a major change, just slight change while scrolling - weird

Ultimately I returned mine, couldn't find a decent case (didnt like the Fintie case or the other "good" one)
I kept the 7, 8 and 10.1 versions, I liked how they feel in the hand better. (easier to read books on)

Which media player would be best for this tablet? VLC, MX, ARC? I'll need it to play a vast majority of video formats..
I've heard Just player and nextplayer are best for video playback on mobile.
Also, any recs for which storage card to put into this?

Since Walmart canceled my order, I am planning to buy this tablet on Amaz. Have any one bought 1 of these off brand tablets, and have any suggestions? Thanks for your honest opinions.

I am using Xplayer premium.
I inserted an 128GB amzn Basic sd card, I am sure you can go as high as 1TB, but I was not able to find specifications regarding maximum allowed sd card.

How much did Xplayer premium cost you? I read somewhere on this thread that MAX SD card might be 512..

possible, personally I do not foresee needing more than 512... but up to each own.

How do you get rid of the split screen in Gmail when opening web links?

There are no settings I can find to disable opening web links in Gmail. The new versions of everything from the Gman just seem to want to control everything you do.

Yes! When the onscreen image changes from dark to bright, or vice versa, there's some stepwise brightness adjustment. Yes, most noticeable in low light, at low screen brightness. I've experimented with various display and developer settings, but nothing fixed it.
At the end of the day, it's not a deal breaker for me, but it's definitely annoying.

Yup, same experience for me. I initially thought it was due to auto-brightness being enabled, but it happens even with the setting turned off. It's pretty annoying, as I bought this to be a media consumption machine. I ended up buying another one that's supposed to be new from the link above. Will report back if it's a common issue with these tablets or we just got unlucky.
