This 12.1 inch Onn Pro tablet stands out as a cheap Helio G99 Android 14 slate with a bright, sharp screen and a sturdier, more premium feel than Fire tablets. It handles streaming, browsing, reading, and light gaming well, with 6GB of physical RAM, microSD expansion, Wi Fi 6, and removable bloatware. The main drawbacks are no headphone jack, USB C 2.0 with no video out, and open box condition that can range from spotless to beat up. Some units also show flicker, brightness quirks, Wi Fi instability, or slow updates, so it is best suited to light everyday use.

Common Questions (8)

  • Some units show flicker or stepwise brightness changes, especially in low light or at low brightness, and it can happen even with auto-brightness off. A developer-option workaround that disables HW overlays may reduce it, and some units stop flickering after updates.

  • The tablet has been reported updating through Android 14 with security updates into late 2025, but there is no confirmation it will reach Android 15. Update installs can be slow and may take hours on some units.

  • Most units work normally, but some have trouble with certain networks, hidden SSIDs, or mesh roaming and may need Wi‑Fi toggled off and on or a router reset. Other users report fast, stable Wi‑Fi on different networks, so the issue appears network-dependent on some devices.

  • It uses a Helio G99 with 6GB physical RAM and is described as roughly A9+ speed, with performance close to other midrange tablets. It handles browsing, media, and streaming well, but it is not meant for heavy tasks or as a main computer.

  • A rigid case is recommended because the tablet can flex, and several users had trouble finding a hard shell that covers both front and back. A magnetic-latch case that wakes/sleeps the screen and matte screen protectors were specifically recommended.

  • No 3.5 mm headphone jack is included. A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter can be used instead if wired headphones are needed.

  • The onboard storage cannot be upgraded internally. Storage expansion is via microSD only, and users have reported using cards from 128GB up to 512GB and possibly larger.

  • Video playback is mixed: AVI and MP4 generally play fine, while MKV can fail in some apps unless the player has the right codec or the files are stored locally. Some users also reported playback stopping after 5-15 minutes in multiple players.

Yup, same experience for me. I initially thought it was due to auto-brightness being enabled, but it happens even with the setting turned off. It's pretty annoying, as I bought this to be a media consumption machine. I ended up buying another one that's supposed to be new from the link above. Will report back if it's a common issue with these tablets or we just got unlucky.
I've had 3 of them, they all had this issue - Hoping to save you some time and effort.

Thanks for that. I figured this was probably the case, but good to have confirmation. This is the kind of thing that most people don't even notice, but really annoys a few of us. I'll keep mine and just get used to it. Great tablet otherwise.

Which media player would be best for this tablet? VLC, MX, ARC? I'll need it to play a vast majority of video formats..
I've heard Just player and nextplayer are best for video playback on mobile.
Also, any recs for which storage card to put into this?
Did you try playing videos with this tablet, and were you successful? I used VLC, MX, ARC and Xplayer to play some videos (mkv, avi and mp4) and the problem is that 5-15 minutes in the video, I'm always receiving there is a problem/error with this video and will stop play. All players same result. I know the videos are fine because I played them all on android tv. I assume it is something wrong with the tablet itself, not sure if it is due to restrictions imposed to the os by Walmart or something in the hardware.

This is good to know. I still have a few weeks left to return it. I hope this is not a problem by design. I bought it mainly for playing long videos and reading books.

It looks like this workaround fixed the flicker issue for me:

On many MediaTek-based tablets (like the Onn), the display processing is handled by a suite called MiraVision. A common bypass is to force the GPU to handle all screen composition.
  1. Go to Settings > About Tablet and tap Build Number 7 times to enable Developer Options.
  2. Go to Settings > System > Developer Options.
  3. Scroll down to the Hardware-accelerated rendering section.
  4. Toggle Disable HW overlays to ON.
    • Note: This forces the system to use the GPU for screen compositing. It often stops MiraVision/CABC from "seeing" the content and adjusting the backlight. You may need to re-enable this after a reboot.

I didn't want to return this because I really like the tablet. But the wifi sucks on this. It's on random days, where it will connect and disconnect every 5 seconds. I have it connected to both 2g and 5g connections. Restarting it won't even fix it, the only solution for when it goes wonky is to reset my router. Who the hell has time for that every other day? Or I just got a part-time lemon.

Ok, still some flicker, but I don't notice it nearly as much. I'm honestly not sure if the "Disable HW overlays" setting helped or I'm just getting used to the flicker. I think it helped? 🤷

Zero wifi problems for me. Could be that you got a lemon. Could also be some weird compatibility issue with your network. Have you tried it on a different wifi network?

Yesterday I had a bit more time to play with videos... and here is what I found: playing avi and mp4 works fine with default player from CX File Explorer (free). For mkv same player won't work in most cases due to missing a codec. But I found that HDx Video player is able to play mkv files with no error but one caveat: files need to be locally on tablet or sd card.

I have only tried a few long mp4 videos. So far so good, no problems. Thanks for letting us know.

I just posted about my case but wanted to send specifically to you. This is a good one:

This case is excellent for $15. Latches closed magnetically, also interacts with the tablet's magnet sensor to turn on/off the display: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DSP2DCRS
Thanks for the suggestion. Nice little case.

Can confirm that it is not a lemon. Just acts that way with home wifi, on both my 2ghz and 5ghz. At work it was speedy and perfect, at my friends place it was wonderful. This is the first time I have something which acts that way with my wifi. Will have to do some troubleshooting.

Mine will disconnect from wifi after a few days and I have to reboot it to get it working again. This by itself isn't an issue but I gave my sister a Onn 4k Plus device and it did the same thing. This can't be coincidence. I also have one of the 4k Plus and it doesn't have that issue.

Really disappointed at this, probably will stay away from this brand for a while.

The only wifi issue I've seen thus far is not switching well on my home mesh system. When I move from an area covered by one node to another I need to always switch wifi off/on and sometimes reboot to get it to switch nodes. This is even when it is reporting zero signal. After reboot I have strong signal from the new node. Other devices have required the wifi off/on but not a reboot.

Any settings I can try?

For the tablet, it seems after a firmware update that it works fine now. Maybe it hasn't been enough time but if it doesn't happen in another 2 months I consider that a win. With the streaming device I sent it back and got another one, no problems so far.
