Wow - a laptop from 30 years ago would be worthless today, yet a virtually unchanged graphing calculator from 30 years ago is still the same price...

I'm a math teacher (teach high school during the day and college courses through calculus II as an adjunct), these things are barely worth it at this point. Yet they still sell new ones even! They're OK for lower level math classes in high school (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2), but once you hit precalculus and calculus, you start running into features on newer ones that could be incredibly useful that just aren't on this. One class that I teach is AP Statistics, and with the way that statistical features have evolved on the newer calculators, these are very cumbersome to use in stats, with a lot of limitations and ways of entering things that even I can't keep track of.
I know some people will say things like "we have free things like Desmos and our cell phone to do this stuff on now." That's partially true. They even allow Desmos on AP exams and the SAT now. But Desmos has limitations as well, can be sort of cumbersome for some features, and it is unlikely that anybody would be able to use that on a test in a high school or college class. It just opens up way too many exam security risks. All three of the colleges that I've taught at in recent years actually have department policies that ban the use of online calculators, and require handheld ones.
Also worth noting, an even newer TI-84 is coming out in a few months, the TI-84 Evo. That would make this one even more outdated.

Our pre calc teacher during senior year high school gave us extra time during lunch to come back and finish our tests if we couldn't finish it during class. He said college wouldn't to do this, but he wanted us to do our best. I would write down the test questions/formulas into the calculator's notes section and ask my friends during the interim periods how to solve the problems and then go back to the test at lunch with the test answers from my friends. Not proud of it now but that's how I passed senior year pre calc.

I wrote paragraphs of cheats on it.
My teacher kept asking what I was calculating on a history test.

Wait until you find out how much they charge for college textbooks that are just a stack of paper.

I think I was required to get the 85 in the late 90s for geometry class or something. Wonder if I still have it somewhere. It had games on it that's what it was most useful for.

I still have and use my original TI-83 almost every day, mostly for basic calculator functions. It's over 25 years old!

Check eBay and FB MP before buying these. TI has made millions of them with almost no changes. There is very little resale value on them.

This is so nostalgic! Still remember I couldn't afford this back in the early 2000s, and to think that was over 20 years ago.
