I know some people will say things like "we have free things like Desmos and our cell phone to do this stuff on now." That's partially true. They even allow Desmos on AP exams and the SAT now. But Desmos has limitations as well, can be sort of cumbersome for some features, and it is unlikely that anybody would be able to use that on a test in a high school or college class. It just opens up way too many exam security risks. All three of the colleges that I've taught at in recent years actually have department policies that ban the use of online calculators, and require handheld ones.
Also worth noting, an even newer TI-84 is coming out in a few months, the TI-84 Evo. That would make this one even more outdated.
