They under-powered the power supply for the processor and gpu. The ONLY way you got full GPU wattage is if the battery was fully charged. While gaming, the battery would slowly drain to about 50% and then the gpu wattage would be throttled by the MB until the battery charged back up. They used the battery to supplement due to insufficient wattage from the power supply.
Obviously, when this happened, your frames dropped in game. Sometimes, it would happen at an important moment in the game, and suddenly instead of 90+ frames you drop to 59 with no warning. Super annoying.
Due to this design, my laptop suffered an early death. Something went on the motherboard and it would no longer charge the battery. with EVERY OTHER laptop I've owned, this is not a problem if you are connected to power. The battery can just die and you can still use the unit on power. NOT with the helios. Due to the design, if the battery died, and wouldn't charge, the entire unit was useless. It could not be used without the battery, EVEN IF YOU HAD POWER from the wall. With mine, the battery was fine, and I even replaced it. What happened happened on the mobo, and it would no longer pass current to the battery to charge.
I have a first generation Asus ROG gaming laptop. The VERY FIRST one with a first gen laptop i7 and a GTX870 in it that STILL WORKS TO THIS DAY! Even with a dead battery. But my Helios died after a mere 4 years due to this design.
I won't buy Acer again.
Of course the predator sense button that says "When AC power is disconnected, the panel refresh rate will automatically adjust to 60hz" doesn't do shit. Hell I don't even see it an option right now.
