Also, to the above poster, I didn't see any links to those places where it's "as low as" $330. That's ok, happens to all of us. The other week I sent an email saying "Please see attachment" and whoopsie, totally forgot the attachment!
Now, if you compared the relative value of an entry-level M1 Air to an entry-level M4 Air (which has gone on sale for ~$750-800 over the holiday season, msrp $1000)...I'd argue for the extra ~$400 (double the price), you're getting a machine with a far superior processor, marginally larger screen, and double the ram. Also, it's not going on 6 years old. (But I'm using a 16gb/1tb M1 Air right now, and it's held up splendidly under daily normal use.)
If you have a strict budget or want to get into the apple ecosystem on the cheap, it'd be hard to beat this for a low-risk entry point. It's a delightful, well-made ultrabook that's extremely inexpensive.

as to answer your concern, i think the lagging is more caused by the CPU rather than the DDR5 RAM since i set the memory limit on the tos at 12 GB, almost half of the system RAM, but since my cpu is 8th gen and now it's like 16th gen, like 8 years behind...

16GB is the sweet spot for Apple laptops. Anything less and performance significantly degrades.

-> Even with 8GB RAM, Apple's optimization makes this feel significantly more responsive and "snappy" than any Windows desktop or laptop I've owned. I haven't hit a bottleneck yet for daily use.
-> The screen is gorgeous. Watching 4K movies is a night-and-day difference compared to my 27-inch desktop monitor. The clarity and color are incredible for a budget-friendly laptop.
-> It's thin, quiet, and "cozy" for media consumption. The Touch ID (fingerprint scanner) is a game-changer for quick logins compared to typing passwords. The Trackpad takes a minute to get used to, but it's so much more intuitive and responsive than standard laptop trackpads.
If you can find these refurbished or on sale for $300–$400, I highly recommend trying one before dropping double that on the latest model. For movies, TV shows, and general productivity, the M1 is still a beast.
The lagging is actually caused by their OS software. Apple retards the performance of their products to "extend the longevity" of their batteries. That is code for we want you to upgrade your outdated laptop that is not really outdated. They have USB drives or magic sticks at the Apple store. Those sticks reset the internal clocks when you install a new battery. The processors are plenty powerful but the internal software simulates the degradation of old hardware. If users had the key, they could restore M1 performance like it was brand new.

Secondly, CITATION NEEDED.
But if you're working on videos for a living, you already know this and use industry-standard practices.

i may just skip this and wait for a 16gb ram to show up just to be sure... don't want to buy and can't return or anything
