No, it's a standalone game, don't need the old base game. You can just install and play. Many says it's expansion which normally requires base game but by definition the way the game is, I have been telling people it's a sequel.

Thanks for the clarification. A think I got this confused with Shadow of the Erdtree, which is an expansion.
