Noctua's NH U12A is framed as a premium 120 millimeter air cooler that stands out for quiet operation, strong build quality, and unusually good support. The cooler and its fans are praised for long life, and Noctua has sent free mounting kits, socket adapters, and even a long screwdriver when needed. The main knock is value, since Thermalright options like the Peerless Assassin and Phantom Spirit are repeatedly cited as cheaper coolers with similar or better thermals and close noise levels. It reads as a high end, low hassle choice if support and longevity matter more than raw price.

  • Noctua support can provide free mounting adapters years later for newer socket types.

  • Noctua coolers can offer long-term fan build quality and stable operation over many years.

  • The included long screwdriver can make installing a comparable alternative cooler easier without extra ordering.

  • Using a Woot invoice can reportedly unlock a free additional Noctua mounting kit.

  • The $80 price can be hard to justify versus Thermalright and other 120mm options that cost far less.

  • Thermaltake replacement backplates reportedly can break or snap due to plastic construction.

  • The deal can be less compelling because other brands plus extra case fans can match quietness at similar cost.

  • Some buyers report the cooler arrived broken twice from Amazon.

It's your prerogative regarding what cooler you decide to use regardless of its cost. However, the purpose of my statement was meant put a spotlight on how egregious the price increases Noctua has been implementing over the past few years, a cost I'm unwilling to bear.
maybe they are trying to be a status symbol.

"The noctua air cooler is quieter than the peerless assassin though"

Buy the peerless assassin > buy a noctua g2/phanteks t30/sudokoo mach120 > have money left in your pocket and equal or better performance.

How do those two coolers compare in term of noise?
I've never noticed any noise tbh. I'd have to look up the fan specs but I believe they're within a few dbs of eachother.

Decent price, but I still wouldn't buy even with this discount. For about half this price, Thermalright offers several competitors that are just as good (I run the Phantom Spirit 120 Evo with a 9950X). Even Noctua fans, much as I love them (I have four in my current build), are significantly overpriced now compared to the competition that's now pretty much on par on all metrics.

I beg to differ w/ your assessment. I've fooled around w/ quite a few CPU coolers since dealing w/ the last one I bought from Noctua off Amazon, the NH-U12 which is still going strong to this day cooling a i7-5775C from an older 2014 PC build. Although the metal backplate and tooling fixtures are a nice touch, that shouldn't necessitate exorbitant pricing. be Quiet! CPU coolers use a metal backplate and tooling fixtures bundled w/ their CPU cooler kits akin to Noctua's, but are nowhere near as excessive in price from what I can recall. EVGA, who scaled down their output w/in their PC component business also offers great customer service, but I don't recall them nickel and diming consumers for their products even though they sell more items than just CPU coolers. I also can't speak to your experience dealing w/ broken plastic backplates and tooling fixtures that came from other CPU cooler manufacturers since I've never encountered such an isolated mishap ever since I started building PCs back in 2007. There's not much to go off of your statement based on the assertions you're making since for all I know, it could have been user error due to misinterpreting the instructions when performing the installation, implying that your past troubles could be a personal issue.
The other aspect of their customer service is that they will send you adapters for newer socket types years later (at no charge with proof of need). I had a Noctua cooler I originally installed new on a 3rd gen Intel CPU that I wanted to move to a new AM4 build. The cooler was compatible with the AM4 but needed a newer adapter. Contacted Noctua, submitted some forms, and 3 days later had my AM4 build up and running. I didnt have to spend another $50-100 on a CPU cooler so it was a good investment (from 2010?). Now granted, they have gone up in price pretty significantly since then but wouldnt hesitate buying a new one (if needed).

Love me Noctua. But you could do just as good or better thermal wise, almost as good sound wise, and spend (way) less with something like a Peerless Assassin.

While technically true, they are just inferior products too. I put a cheap thermaltake air cooler in a young kids pc as a replacement to his broken water cooler and I had to get two replacements before the backplate didn't come broken out of the box or after install snapping off the board since it's made of plastic versus metal like noctua. Plus noctua customer service has always treated me well. Years later I asked for them to send me an intel mounting kit and they sent it free of charge no questions asked. You can't beat that kind of service

You're right. I made it all up just for fun because I had nothing better to do with my time. It's a plastic backplate with the metal screw holes pressed into it. They were pulled out. Probably someone else's return from Amazon. Why the fark would I make this up? lol

what the heck, just get a Thermalright Assassin for half the price and get better temps....

I hope slickdealers are smart enough to do some online research first....

Thermalright peerless assassin 120 se ftw, new gaming build should be Ryzen x3d chipset anyway, which do not require much thermal disspation.

According to your statement, that would warrant you reusing your CPU cooler multiple times in which that implies. I might be the exception (or anomaly), but I don't reuse the air coolers I already have/had running in a given PC prior and since I'm spending no more than $30-40 for each air cooler at a time, it doesn't necessitate me having to reach out to customer service of the manufacturer in order to request an upgrade for the backplate and tooling fixtures to accommodate the CPU orientation of a new/different chipset. I've been preserving my PCs over time (since 2010) for content creation so I prefer to keep them fitted w/ the original cooler I had installed in them unless it breaks down.

Please at least supply the full context: In the 9950X3D noise-normalized thermal testing, the NH-D15 G2 held a 69.4-degree average (over ambient), putting it at about 90 degrees once accounting for ambient. That's borderline. It was the only air cooler in our test suite so far that was capable of safely completing this test without throttling or hitting a thermal trip.

Translation for the normies: We used AMD's biggest, hottest normal CPU. We lowered the fan speed to "normalize" the noise (which most people would never do) to limit the fans. When we did that, of course, the quietest fan won. In other words, that was a gimmie to Noctua.

But when you run fans like the rest of the planet runs fans, the difference between the and a Peerless Assassin 120 is around 2% or so difference. Article here: https://gamersnexus.net/coolers/b...ermals-air --- and THAT is why Thermalright is walking all over Noctua in sales for the past year or so. Noctua is becoming obsolete.
couldn't have said it better.
