There are known security issues with TP-Link firmware calling home - I have merlin on Asus hdw as a better security choice- TP-Link is a Chinese company that manufactures network equipment and smart home products. The company was established in 1996 in Shenzhen.

Wouldn't any router work with Xfinity?

Throw Merlin on this, but I'd recommend spending the extra $100 and getting a UDR7 if you want an AIO.

It doesn't look like this model is supported by Merlin, unless I missed something: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

This is a fairly new model so I do not believe it is currently supported. However, this is a Broadcom-based router so it is very possible that support may be added later.

If you're spending an extra ~$100, get the RT-BE92U which runs Merlin today.

Why old is not bad

The ASUS RT-BE55 (WiFi 7) and RT-AX86U Pro (WiFi 6) are high-performance routers targeting different generations of wireless technology [1, 2].
ASUS RT-BE55 (BE2500)
Technology: WiFi 7 (802.11be) [1].
Speed: Up to 2500 Mbps total bandwidth (600 Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1900 Mbps on 5GHz).
Best For: Users seeking future-proof technology, lower latency, and better handling of many devices simultaneously via WiFi 7 features like 160MHz channels and 4K QAM [1].
Networking: Typically includes 2.5 Gbps ports for multi-gigabit internet [1].
ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700)
Technology: WiFi 6 (802.11ax) [2].
Speed: Up to 5700 Mbps total bandwidth (861 Mbps on 2.4GHz + 4804 Mbps on 5GHz).
Best For: Users needing maximum, proven throughput for current devices, robust gaming features, and high-performance routing [2].
Networking: Features a 2.5 Gbps port and a 1 Gbps WAN/LAN combo, with a powerful quad-core processor [2].
Key Comparisons
Speed (Raw Bandwidth): The RT-AX86U Pro (WiFi 6) offers significantly higher total throughput on the 5GHz band (4804 Mbps) compared to the RT-BE55 (1900 Mbps) [1, 2].
Latency/Efficiency: The RT-BE55 (WiFi 7) is superior for reducing latency and handling dense environments, despite lower peak speeds in this specific configuration [1].
Processor: The RT-AX86U Pro is known for a powerful 2.0 GHz quad-core processor, making it excellent for heavy traffic management [2].
Future-Proofing: The RT-BE55 is the better choice for adopting WiFi 7, while the RT-AX86U Pro is a mature, highly reliable WiFi 6 standard [1, 2].
Summary Recommendation: Choose the RT-AX86U Pro for higher raw speeds and robust, proven performance today. Choose the RT-BE55 for updated WiFi 7 features and improved efficiency with newer devices.
