The ASUS RT BE55 stands out as a budget WiFi 7 router that fits best in an ASUS mesh setup and offers newer wireless features for lower latency and better handling of many devices. It is also described as working with Xfinity, and ASUS hardware is favored here over a similarly priced TP Link option for mesh reliability. The main caveat is firmware support, since Merlin compatibility is not confirmed for this model yet. A few comments also point to the RT BE92U or RT AX86U Pro as stronger alternatives if you can spend more.

  • building an ASUS AiMesh network because commenters say it's a good deal specifically if you are building a mesh network with Asus.

  • people who want to use it with Xfinity because reviews commenters say it works with Xfinity.

  • buyers who want WiFi 7 features for a dense home with many devices because the community notes the RT-BE55 is better for lower latency and handling many devices at once via WiFi 7 capabilities.

  • ASUS mesh buyers who are okay with Broadcom-based firmware experimentation because one commenter says it may not be supported by Merlin yet, but since it's Broadcom-based, support could be added later.

  • people specifically hoping to run ASUSWRT-Merlin on this exact model because commenters say it doesn't appear to be supported (and point to the Merlin compatibility/support list).

  • buyers who want an all-in-one (AIO) solution with Merlin immediately because commenters recommend spending an extra ~$100 to get the RT-BE92U instead, since it runs Merlin today.

  • people who are counting on Merlin support as a requirement right now because the community points out the model is fairly new and not currently supported on the Merlin site.

  • buyers who are sensitive to router reliability because one commenter reports having several ASUS routers die on them.

Throw Merlin on this, but I'd recommend spending the extra $100 and getting a UDR7 if you want an AIO.

It doesn't look like this model is supported by Merlin, unless I missed something: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

This is a fairly new model so I do not believe it is currently supported. However, this is a Broadcom-based router so it is very possible that support may be added later.

There are known security issues with TP-Link firmware calling home - I have merlin on Asus hdw as a better security choice- TP-Link is a Chinese company that manufactures network equipment and smart home products. The company was established in 1996 in Shenzhen.

Why old is not bad

The ASUS RT-BE55 (WiFi 7) and RT-AX86U Pro (WiFi 6) are high-performance routers targeting different generations of wireless technology [1, 2].
ASUS RT-BE55 (BE2500)
Technology: WiFi 7 (802.11be) [1].
Speed: Up to 2500 Mbps total bandwidth (600 Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1900 Mbps on 5GHz).
Best For: Users seeking future-proof technology, lower latency, and better handling of many devices simultaneously via WiFi 7 features like 160MHz channels and 4K QAM [1].
Networking: Typically includes 2.5 Gbps ports for multi-gigabit internet [1].
ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700)
Technology: WiFi 6 (802.11ax) [2].
Speed: Up to 5700 Mbps total bandwidth (861 Mbps on 2.4GHz + 4804 Mbps on 5GHz).
Best For: Users needing maximum, proven throughput for current devices, robust gaming features, and high-performance routing [2].
Networking: Features a 2.5 Gbps port and a 1 Gbps WAN/LAN combo, with a powerful quad-core processor [2].
Key Comparisons
Speed (Raw Bandwidth): The RT-AX86U Pro (WiFi 6) offers significantly higher total throughput on the 5GHz band (4804 Mbps) compared to the RT-BE55 (1900 Mbps) [1, 2].
Latency/Efficiency: The RT-BE55 (WiFi 7) is superior for reducing latency and handling dense environments, despite lower peak speeds in this specific configuration [1].
Processor: The RT-AX86U Pro is known for a powerful 2.0 GHz quad-core processor, making it excellent for heavy traffic management [2].
Future-Proofing: The RT-BE55 is the better choice for adopting WiFi 7, while the RT-AX86U Pro is a mature, highly reliable WiFi 6 standard [1, 2].
Summary Recommendation: Choose the RT-AX86U Pro for higher raw speeds and robust, proven performance today. Choose the RT-BE55 for updated WiFi 7 features and improved efficiency with newer devices.
