The TX RZ50 stands out as a strong value AVR for smaller to medium rooms, with Dirac Live onboard, guided setup menus, and enough power to drive demanding speakers cleanly. It is praised for clear, cohesive sound, easy calibration, and solid performance at concert levels, with some owners calling it hard to beat near this price. The main tradeoffs are that the extra two channels matter only if you need them, and reliability and retailer handling have raised concerns in a few firsthand reports. A good fit when you want Dirac and 9.2 channel flexibility without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.

Common Questions (5)

  • The main practical difference is the extra two processing channels and higher power rating, not a dramatic sonic jump. At normal listening levels, the RZ50 may not sound meaningfully different from the RZ30, so the better buy depends on whether you need 11 channels or can save $150.

  • At $849, it is widely treated as a strong value because it is usually sold well above that price and includes Dirac Live. It is especially compelling for smaller to medium rooms and for buyers who want Onkyo's feature set without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.

  • Yes. Dirac Live is standard on the TX-RZ50 with no extra charge, and the included calibration mic is sufficient for basic app-based setup. For PC/Mac workflows, a UMIK-1 can be more accurate and easier for target-curve adjustments.

  • It can process 11 channels, but channels 10 and 11 are not assignable and must be powered externally. That makes it a good fit for 7.2.4 only if you plan to add an external amp for the last two channels.

  • The code reportedly works on the RZ30 in some cases, but at least one attempt failed. If you are shopping the RZ30, it is worth trying the code before checkout.

What's the cheapest new Onkyo receiver available? I bought a new OLED TV for my bedroom but my old Onkyo doesn't recognize eARC HDMI apparently.
Depends on how many channels you need.

The RZ30 which is $700 right now is probably the best value for that cost ime.

This is the reason why I went to a Best Buy store and had them price match my RZ30 to adorama's price. I read on a post previously that someone had gone to a Best Buy store and did a price match. I tried through a chat online and also a online phone call and both had said that they can't price match to adorama since they are not on their list of places for price matching, but both had said that if you go to the store they are more flexible in price matching. I went 10 days ago to the store and they priced matched adorama's price with no problem at all. Also you know that it is a brand new product from them and if there are issues during the warranty period you can bring it back to Best Buy and they will take care of sending it to Onkyo. I bought mine when adorama had it for $749, so I'm going to see if Best Buy will give an adjustment to the new lower price. I wasn't able to go last weekend when they had the sale for $700. I'm still within the 15 days, but I'm probably pushing my luck for it to happen.
So they don't carry these models on store directly near me. Did they have one in stock or ship to store for your price match

This is such a great unit for this price. Have had a couple years now. Highest recommendation tough to beat any where near this price point.

They only had a display model at the time so they shipped me one and I received it the next day.

Thanks. But I only 5.1 for my bedroom. Since eARC isn't working, I had to dig through my box of cables to use an optical audio cable so that the TV sound come out the 5.1 speakers instead of using TV speakers. My TV doesn't even recognize ARC since I guess my Onkyo is too old to handle that signal. (I think I bought that receiver back in 2007.) The RZ30 seems like overkill - more expensive than the new TV I just bought.

Yes it is overkill.
TBH the main reason these Onkyo's are popular is because of Dirac RC.

I would suggest looking for a slightly older OB or even used one.
You can find pretty good deals with the popularity of soundbars.

I am with y'all. If prices keep dropping, I just might get it towards the end of the year for 700-750 if we get there. I dont even need a completely new received. Only issue is that I have PS5 connected to my older Yamaha and it doesnt natively supprot 120hz.

This is only advantageous if you need the extra two channels.
Audible wise unlikely you would hear any big difference, if at all.
You're talking 23 lbs vs 31 lbs, and 100w/ch vs 120. That's a substantial PS difference, even if you're not using the extra channels. And yes, you may or may not hear the difference, but if the prices are close...

I don't want to keep posting about my experience I'm going through with Adorama, but I just had to return an rz30 because it was Not new antenna falling off and hdmi control issues sending into frenzy. I returned it as defective within the 5 day window. Never got any update on return for a week after I checked ups and they received it. I sent an email documenting problems and called and rest assured no return shipping should be deducted or 15% restocking fee. I finally received refund email and they deducted 15% over a hundred dollars stating item was in used condition. No crap they sent me a used item. I looked for bbb. Adorama store front in nyc is accredited bbb but parent company with whom we deal with online is not affiliated and has a rating of F because of unreasoned complaints. I called on this fee and they said they would send it to return processing litigation and i should receive the difference in 2-7 days but there is documentation of that phone call received. They also ship in manufacturing packaging and if you don't click the box for insurance if someone takes your item and you receive and empty box then it's on you. Even if you do have the insurance you have to deal with it all. I've lived and learned that Adorama sells so much refurb, good luck knowing what you're getting and they can delay like they did with me. Initially telling me to contact the manufacturer for the problem with my unit, if I did I would have fell outside the 5 day defective policy. Just be careful, many good experiences and many bad and they can delay and hide behind emails and call wait times once they know what your calling about. I actually got hung up on after 20 minute hold once I was directed to tier 2 support for my wrong refund. Just becareful great price but must question at what cost. Cost me over $100 and only next step is through my credit card company if it isn't made right.

It's super dicey. After my last experience (2 months in, still waiting for replacement), I swore never to buy from adorama again, even if it's a very tempting deal.

My opinion comes from personal experience.
At average listening levels, if those 8lbs & 20 watts made an audible benefit, didn't hear one.

I would say $150 is a substantial difference here in SD.

Having personal experience with the RZ30 also.
Of those 3, I would easily go with the RZ30 @ current sale price of $700.
Assuming you don't need the extra two channels of course.

This is a great all around for this price
I owned it personally for about 18 months and sold it for about what I paid for it
Dirac onboard out of the box and if you have a smaller to medium room size , in my ownership experience, there is really little else out there at this price point and capability.

Have a Denon x3400h that is giving headaches. When it works it's fantastic, but every few months or will encounter some fresh bug that forces a full software reset and a setup that takes way too long. Maybe Onkyo is the answer? This seems to covers the features we use, streaming over wi-fi and airplay. Only need 7.1 + zone 2 out to a separate home receiver.

If you're looking to change to Onkyo.
You might want to look at the RZ30, it's $700 right now.
It's much newer, it has 2 independent sub outs, offers access to Dirac's subwoofer/bass correction/integration,saves you $150.

Audible wise unlikely to hear a difference between them ime.
Here is a comparison that may help to see if it may work for you.
