The TX RZ50 stands out as a strong value AVR for smaller to medium rooms, with Dirac Live onboard, guided setup menus, and enough power to drive demanding speakers cleanly. It is praised for clear, cohesive sound, easy calibration, and solid performance at concert levels, with some owners calling it hard to beat near this price. The main tradeoffs are that the extra two channels matter only if you need them, and reliability and retailer handling have raised concerns in a few firsthand reports. A good fit when you want Dirac and 9.2 channel flexibility without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.
Common Questions (5)
The main practical difference is the extra two processing channels and higher power rating, not a dramatic sonic jump. At normal listening levels, the RZ50 may not sound meaningfully different from the RZ30, so the better buy depends on whether you need 11 channels or can save $150.
At $849, it is widely treated as a strong value because it is usually sold well above that price and includes Dirac Live. It is especially compelling for smaller to medium rooms and for buyers who want Onkyo's feature set without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.
Yes. Dirac Live is standard on the TX-RZ50 with no extra charge, and the included calibration mic is sufficient for basic app-based setup. For PC/Mac workflows, a UMIK-1 can be more accurate and easier for target-curve adjustments.
It can process 11 channels, but channels 10 and 11 are not assignable and must be powered externally. That makes it a good fit for 7.2.4 only if you plan to add an external amp for the last two channels.
The code reportedly works on the RZ30 in some cases, but at least one attempt failed. If you are shopping the RZ30, it is worth trying the code before checkout.

This unit is less of a Dirac learning set up curve than brands like Arcam
Its more " Asian branded style..meaning there are menus that step you though some things.
With Arcam you get none of that along with a few other Arcam set up " uniqueness"
Considering the actual transaction prices I paid,
I also owned the Denon X4800 and Marantz Cinema 40 at the same time and demoed them back to back in my own home with my own media
I have to say considering the transaction price to performance ratio, I preferred the Onkyo to the Denon and Marantz
I highly prefer Dirac to Audyssey and with the Onkyo its standard equipment.
If you dont have a large room and own pretty efficient speakers this is a heck of a performance deal right out of the box
Really ,the only reason I changed things out was I found what I thought was a firesale deal on some Kef Meta speakers and I ended up changing out everything in an area

There are literally hundreds of owners and its amazing that the complaints seem to be almost non existent about lower impedance speakers
But...if you are going to use ASR benchmarking them you have to bring up Sinad numbers as well...the RZ50 does better than many others at higher prices in that regard

There are literally hundreds of them
In my opinion, a better source of information than some that like to speculate about products they have never owned long term

Very likely we will start seeing more sales on these older models.

It's newer, independent sub outs, unlikely you would hear a difference and saves you $150!
