The TX RZ50 stands out as a strong value AVR for smaller to medium rooms, with Dirac Live onboard, guided setup menus, and enough power to drive demanding speakers cleanly. It is praised for clear, cohesive sound, easy calibration, and solid performance at concert levels, with some owners calling it hard to beat near this price. The main tradeoffs are that the extra two channels matter only if you need them, and reliability and retailer handling have raised concerns in a few firsthand reports. A good fit when you want Dirac and 9.2 channel flexibility without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.
Common Questions (5)
The main practical difference is the extra two processing channels and higher power rating, not a dramatic sonic jump. At normal listening levels, the RZ50 may not sound meaningfully different from the RZ30, so the better buy depends on whether you need 11 channels or can save $150.
At $849, it is widely treated as a strong value because it is usually sold well above that price and includes Dirac Live. It is especially compelling for smaller to medium rooms and for buyers who want Onkyo's feature set without stepping up to RZ70 pricing.
Yes. Dirac Live is standard on the TX-RZ50 with no extra charge, and the included calibration mic is sufficient for basic app-based setup. For PC/Mac workflows, a UMIK-1 can be more accurate and easier for target-curve adjustments.
It can process 11 channels, but channels 10 and 11 are not assignable and must be powered externally. That makes it a good fit for 7.2.4 only if you plan to add an external amp for the last two channels.
The code reportedly works on the RZ30 in some cases, but at least one attempt failed. If you are shopping the RZ30, it is worth trying the code before checkout.

Based on folks who have experience with this vendor, it seems like selling used products for new and then charging return shipping will always be a reality as long as SD exists. Don't forget the SD cheerleaders who never saw a bad AVR and constantly in "selling mode" while pretending to give advice to your benefit.
GreyRecess is kinda going backwards in the AVR dept: the SR875 was 140W into 2ch and the RZ30 is 100W into 2ch. A good modern comp would be the RZ70 but especially w/tariffs, the pricing is still a bit tough to swallow.
Good luck to everyone who is enjoying this purchase, like I am!!

Yes, your correction to 120W into 2 channels is valid for the RZ50. I generally don't buy "backwards" as the years go on. The expectation is you get better equipment as you have more disposable income, etc.
Yes power is easily negated, imo for the better in the long run.
Thats why better power as better equipment isn't a good measuring stick.
Better features needed is(ie RC,4k/8k,2.1, etc).
FYI if you do switch to 7.2.4.
Keep in mind channels 10 & 11 aren't assignable, so they need to be powered externally and the sub outs are mono/parallel.
EDIT: I got a firmware update literally an hour after writing this comment and whaddya know the Bluetooth issue is resolved! I can't believe it!
Bought it at the Best Buy outlet open box and sold it for what I paid 18 months later
For this money..if you have a smaller to medium sized room and are not trying to create gym sized SPL then I dont know of another AVR that comes close to this price all in...for the sonics it can provide
Unless the Integra 3.4 comes back at sub $600..IMO this is the real deal
if you want a " feel" and dont want to spend RZ70 money I say go for it
There are people on AVS forum that bought this unit when it first came out in 2021 that are very happy
I would also suspect they ask for a signature at delivery so I doubt this would be as exposed as you suggest

Which are very good on the RZ70...and not so good on other units that failed Audio Science reviews testing
I owned the Onkyo RZ50 for about 18 months

I have not personally owned the 30 or the 70
However I have owned the 50 , the Pioneer LX805 and the Integra 8.4
The 70 shares the same amp/power supply of the Pioneer and Integra models and they all weigh within 2 lbs of each other
In no way does the 50 have " feel" of the higher end units, IMO
Those units also have much more premium remote than the 50
I would also argue there is nothing in the market that has the feel of the higher end units at anywhere close to their price point
However, looking at price point, I dont think anyone would be disappointed with the " feel" of the 50

What he should be asking is if the Sinad numbers are better on the RZ50 than the 30, IMO
Owners dont seem to be complaining about power issues with the RZ50..Many of whom that have owned the AVR since 2021
Actual ownership can be your friend on knowledge
I suggest anyone looking to buy the RZ50 read the owners thread on AVS forum
Lots of actual ownership tips and tricks and a lot less speculation/conjecture

I am getting 2L2R warning and the unit shuts down immediately. It seems like the opamp for those two channels are shot.
Otherwise I loved the unit running 7.2.4 speaker setup (two channels were being powered by the Yamaha unit using Onkyo's pre-out). Dirac setup really makes a difference.
Maybe at this discounted price I would risk the reliability issues but at the full price I paid, I can't recommend it.
