Genuine question : now that amp modelers have gotten so good, is this sort of pricing justified?

Purely from a sound perspective, a model of this amp through a FRFR speaker versus this amp, would there be a difference?

This amp is a modeler. It's a digital recreation of a tube-driven Deluxe Reverb. Yes, it's a single-amp modeler. Who is this for? Someone who really liked a Deluxe Reverb and doesn't want to deal with the (minimal) maintenance that real tube-amp occasionally needs.

My tube amps don't sound better than my modelers. They "feel" different. More touch-sensitive. I use both, depending on what my ear feels like hearing. One isn't better than the other, they're just different. Anyone who tries to tell you one is "better" isn't being intellectually honest.

What if I had to pick? I'd pick a modeler, just because of the variety at hand with one.

That said, unless you really know why you would want this particular amp, don't buy it. It's a single-purpose modeler, which in my mind is the worst combination of "real" amp and modeler. A person might have a very specific reason for buying it and find it very satisfying for that particular reason.

Modeler/Capture and tube amp user seconding this reply.

As the tech progresses it's interesting to see the shift in the mindset of "this sounds like crap" to "wait, I couldn't tell?"

Thank you so much, that was a very well written take. Super helpful. Smilie

I picked up a Hotone Ampero Stage II for $450 off reverb and pair it with a Monoprice stage right tube amp bought for $229 (used $100 coupon available at the time). So for less than $700, I have a setup that has IR captures of the original amp this amp attempts to recreate AND access to a billion other amp, cab, room, and pedal IRs. I don't know why anyone would pay this price for such a limited application.

In recordings the differences aren't very noticeable but while being in the same room as the amp/modeler I can definitely tell the difference. Still no comparison and there are real technical reasons for that.

I wouldn't have much, if any, faith in my ability to tell them apart by listening. By playing? Sure, but I know what I'm playing through. Most of the big touring acts have been using modelers/captures for a long time now. I wouldn't be able to notice.

There are people who swear they can hear the difference in different MP3 bit rates. Well, good for them, if they actually can. Same for things like modelers. I think that becomes particularly true the more complicated a signal chain is.

I'm one of those people who avoids MP3s altogether. Lossless all the way.

I have this amp, so here's the thing
It does sound a little better than my line 6 helix run through and FRFR on Deluxe Reverb setting but really not a whole heck of a lot. As one person said above it does one thing so unless you're using it as a pedal platform it has very little versatility. You can get 90% of this for 350 for a line 6 pod go and 300 for and FRFR and have literally a million other options.
