For anyone who doesn't know, this is half a game. The game abruptly ends after the modern era. They cut out other eras that are normally in these games at launch, in order to sell them as DLC.

Just picked this up on the Apple Arcade. I've been a huge fan of Civilization for a long time. Really didn't want to buy into all the hate. But I didn't enjoy this one. Will try to give it a bit more time.

Then this franchise is done. Should known the studio was getting worse when they wanted 70 dollars.

I tried Civ 4 once for a few days but didn't get hooked as I was told I would. I want to try it again, what version is the absolute best for ps5?

Civ 5 or 6 are the standard. Civ 5 plays like Civ 1-4 with improvements, and Civ 6 is very different. If you didn't like 4, try 6.

The video game industry has turned into the nastiest cash grab for games that aren't even complete at launch. Nintendo is weaponizing our childhoods against us. The 9th gen consoles have been out like 4 years now and no good exclusives making it worth the investment and yet the console prices just went up instead of down...

So, there are a number of articles that say things have improved, and this article (https://screenrant.com/civilizati...ring-2026/ ) says that it will be worth playing in the spring after the next updated.
So the question is: is it worth twenty bucks now?

Civ 5 played nothing like 4. Civ 5 is closer to Civ 7. With 4 being closer to 6. The biggest difference is the troop stacking. Getting rid of that put the AI at a steep disadvantage when it comes to war.
5 did improve a bit later for me for the first large dlc. Brave new world. Though I still found it lacking in depth compared to 4. My biggest miss was the way Civ 4 handled culture.

As a long time fan of this franchise, it's always worth waiting for the gold/complete/GotY edition.

That logic can be applied to most games, sure, but for many games any extra DLC is often a new mission chain and maybe a new weapon or character for a few extra hours of content.

For the Civ franchise you'll get entire new civilizations to play as, new game modes added on, new resources, units etc. For the Civ franchise especially it's worth holding out for the complete game.

Shit it's only Apple Arcade and I don't have any free target signups. That sucks
