I owned the stock back at IPO, owned 6 gopros, each gopro had an issues. Starting with GP7, overheating would3 cause the thing to freeze.
Still has not changed... the new gold standard is DJI or Insta360.
Just about all of them will overheat if your run it at the highest FPS setting for that resolution.
Last time I looked into this people said running it at least 1 full setting lower on the FPS helps. For shorter videos, like less than a minute or so, then the high settings are ok. But for long videos most seem to say the 2.7k, or lower, at 100 Fps generally worked better.
Until they can shrink their CPU to 5-7nm, currently at 12nm, it will run hot on extended recordings at higher settings.
If your hobby is recording paint dry at 4k/60 you might. If you're recording 5-10 min clips surfing, diving, skiing, MTB, etc. you're not gona have a problem.
Hero 11, 12, 13 use the same sensor with modest imaging improvement. More notably in my opinion, the 13 moved to new batteries, new magnetic mount, new-ish lens mount; from a future proof statement the 13 will likely have more compatibility going forward while <10, 11, 12 all remain roughly in the same rough generation.
I bought this because I had dropped $379 on a new DJI Action 6 and the focal distance on it was absolutely terrible. All the aperture settings sounded great, but they ended up making the image very fuzzy even in good lighting situations.
GoPro 12 might have overheating issues, but still outperforms DJI in anti-shake and focal distance.
