Tapo's 2K wireless doorbell stands out for local SD recording, on device detection, and subscription free basic alerts, making it useful for checking packages and keeping footage on hand. The camera also supports person, package, and car detection, and wired Tapo models can work with RTSP or ONVIF for local use. Caveats include grainy night video, frequent motion triggers that can drain the battery, and occasional reconnect issues after power loss. Rich notifications and some chime options may require extra hardware or a paid tier, so it fits best if local storage matters more than polish.

Common Questions (4)

  • No subscription is needed for local SD recording and basic text notifications. Rich notifications with screenshots, GIFs, or video require the paid tier, and the camera can still record weeks of footage to an SD card.

  • Battery life can vary a lot with trigger frequency and setup. One installation lasted less than 3 months with heavy activity and low-light use, while another wire-free setup dropped about 40% over 80 days with only a couple triggers per day.

  • It is not ONVIF in the strict sense, but it does support RTSP with VBR only. Wired Tapo cameras and wired-with-battery models support ONVIF/RTSP, which can be used for local streaming and NVR-style setups.

  • The listed wireless model may require a Tapo smart hub for indoor chime support instead of a standalone chime. The upgraded doorbell version includes a chime in the box and adds a larger battery and more AI features.

How do we bypass the existing wired doorbell chime. thanks
If it were me installing one, I would remove the existing doorbell and put wire nuts on the wires, stuff them in, and mount this over the hole of the old doorbell.

So anyone else have reconnection issue with tapo? Once a month I would have a surge / lost of power. It never auto connect back correctly for me. I need to bring out ladder, climb up, remove the back, hit reset.

Mine does without a subscription
You sure you're not on a 30 day trial? (I accidentally accepted a trial too, don't even know how) That's one of the main features of the subscription, the rich notification.

Wyze lets you use a wyze cam as a chime for when the door bell rings. Wonder of tapo lets you use a tapo cam as a chime??
Yes it can play a sound on any camera be it a custom sound or a siren or alert

Is the upgraded doorbell version, Comes with a chime, even bigger battery. More ai feature, thief dectector. Better sensor color night view etc.
if you buy the one ops posted, you cannot buy a standard alone chime. Will have to fork another $20 buying the smart hub which also has a speaker and can be use has a chime.
Do you know if their doorbell cameras have ONVIF or w/e it's called that makes me wire it up to something like frigate?

I prefer the tapo cameras at this point over something like nest or wyze. Local SD recording and on board smart detection that doesn't require a subscription. I've been slowly swapping my home cameras to them because of it.
AI generated comparison: D210 advantages over the D205:
  1. Bigger battery — 6,400 mAh vs 5,200 mAh
  2. Better weatherproofing — IP65 vs IP54
  3. Color night vision with spotlight — LED ring around the button; D205 is primarily IR
  4. Longer night vision range — 33 ft vs 25 ft
  5. More AI detection types — Person + Vehicle (and likely Pet/Package); D205 is primarily Person only
  6. Chime included in the box — D205 requires a separate Tapo Hub purchase for indoor chime
  7. Anti-theft pin — included for secure mounting

Agreed. Have my apartment cameras for my cats when I'm gone all on Tapo. Replaced Wyze trash. Crystal clear cameras and all local storage.

Oh that's what we mean by rich notification. Rich notifications have pictures, gifs or videos in them instead of just text. Yes that's correct we do get text notifications with the SD card no subscription, but no pic or video.

Thank you..I do have the VIGI-NVR4032H that is basically TP-LINK brand. I think I read on TP-LINK website the d235 wired model offers onvif.
So... For streaming using rtsp or onvif, only wired cameras are supported in Tplink space. ONVIF is just a camera standard that calls rtsp.

Any wired or wired with battery have onvif/rtsp support. If your cameras have functions such as PTZ, ONVIF will allow you to control those functions when streaming.

I already ordered and installed it a few weeks ago from the same $35 deal. I used the 3M adhesive on white paint. Is it even possible to remove the backplate without paint damage? I am not impressed by the video quality. You cannot even make out faces since it's so low-rate and blocky. The mailman looks like a bunch of macroblocks ten feet from the camera. I have palm trees in the front and they have cartoon palm leaves with thick, over sharpened edges. There's a stop sign across the street. It's basically a Minecraft stop sign. Worse than the digits on a calculator. I put an old 64gb microsd in it. I wonder if the card is affecting bitrate or not. The videos are the 2k resolution (about 1300p) when downloaded, but look much lower res. My battery is also dying at about 5% a day, mostly because it's being triggered 300 times a day from passing cars. I may have to mess with the sensitivity, although I'd prefer to keep it on in case an accident happens and I need footage.

Will the d210 provide significantly better video quality? Any suggestions on how to remove the 3M adhesive? I wonder if the units have the same backplate and I can reuse the old one or not. No one said anything about these issues in the last deal thread and the reviews all have glowing praise for the video quality. The only thing I'm impressed about the doorbell is that it can be accessed even outside of your home Wi-Fi network, without a subscription. I was surprised to see notifications and be able to watch and record from it like normal, even though I wasn't home. The app is so badly designed it doesn't even have filters in the events list. You need to scroll through hundreds of videos and check their icons to find the type you want. And yet the downloaded section let's you filter videos, go figure.

Anything is better than Ring now that Bezos and Amazon have agreed to let Federal authorities access their Ring cameras' entire online video storage area without needing any sort of warrant.

If you love the idea of a massive and powerful lawless surveillance state having access to everyone's camera footage with no judicial oversight, Ring is the device for you.

Same with me, I have a few of their cameras and they disconnect about once a month without correctly connecting back. I have them mounted about 8 feet high so I don't have to climb, simply unplug the power cord and re-plug but it sucks that I have to manually do that.
