So, how sketchy is this security wise?

I tried another palm vein deadbolt and liked it ok. After an adjustment period, it was 90% success rate. Only requiring a second scan attempt 10% of the time. The only tricky part is getting palms registered at first and then getting the right distance and position for unlocking. While I personally had consistent results, the same couldn't be said for my family which struggled to get the palm scan to unlock consistently. So security wise, it's unlikely to give a false positive and unlock for an unauthorized palm. More likely to give a false negative and won't unlock for an authorized user palm.
