The North Face still holds the patent for their Thermoball design, and this jacket also uses their license Windwall fabric for wind-proofing. 20D outer shell is also decently durable, 30D inner lining is very durable. This product is meant to compete against Patagonia's Nano Puff; which is also on sale right now for a few bucks more.

It's a fairly high-performance garment. Warmth rating around 750-800 fill down jacket equivalent but with more durability and stays warm when wet, which is a weakness of down. The negative of this garments like this (synthetic fill and robust outer lining) is weight-to-warmth isn't great; they're heavy relative to down jackets.

There is a cheaper version of this jacket with less fill density and not as robust fabric.

It's good if you live somewhere that's has harsh winters and you need warmth and some element protection but don't always want to wear a shell everywhere, or if you're just someone who just doesn't mind trading some weight/warmth ratio.

Down + shell is always going to be the best for most recreational applications. But that also means you're wearing more layers and takes up more packing space.

I personally prefer jackets like this in my kit, I don't mind the extra grams of weight to stay warm in some moist weather.
