If you are looking for a first "good" knife, I'd have some reservations with this one. Shun knives have a reputation for chipping, but this is more likely because the people who buy them are coming off cheap knives which are made from much more forgiving soft steels. As an alternative, right now off Bed Bath and Beyond, you can pick up a Zwilling Four Star 7" sentoku for $40 + a $10 filler item or shipping.

Deal has expired.
They have the left handed version on the Shun outlet for this price now though. (These knives have asymmetric bevels.)
