The Coway Airmega 400 is a large, smart HEPA purifier that moves a lot of air and does a strong job cutting dust, odors, and airborne particles. It works well in bigger spaces, can run around the clock, and the auto sensor and scheduled high speed mode help it collect plenty of debris on the prefilter. Long term durability looks solid, with multiple reports of years of trouble free use. The main drawbacks are expensive replacement filters, especially for the pair, plus occasional complaints about chemical smells, noise, WiFi setup hassles, and no child lock. A capable whole home style purifier if upkeep cost and size are acceptable.

  • households with pets (like a cat or dog) because commenters said auto-detection is sensitive to pet-related odor/particles and the pre-filter can be vacuumed regularly to keep up with the extra activity.

  • buyers who are okay managing filter costs by using non-OEM replacements because multiple owners said they use aftermarket filters and "can't tell a difference," and one long-term owner reported the unit still works great after years with non-OEM filters.

  • people who can tolerate app/WiFi setup quirks because if you're willing to use the app for schedules, owners reported very good performance (including running high at night for white noise) and the non-WiFi version was also reported as working well in a master bedroom.

  • homeowners running one purifier in a bedroom and another in a main work/living area because it can circulate air effectively (they reported it working well about once an hour) and they found HEPA filter replacement about twice a year with regular pre-filter vacuuming.

  • people who want to keep windows closed while purifying indoor air because one commenter specifically warned that if you run it with windows open, the fan can pull in unfiltered outdoor pollutants and reduce effectiveness.

  • people who are sensitive to chemical odors from replacement filters because multiple commenters reported that replacement filters (even OEM) can smell like chemicals and one person stopped using the Coway after noticing the terrible smell.

  • shoppers trying to purify across multiple floors with a single unit because commenters said it doesn't do well between floors/enclosed spaces and recommended multiple units for big rooms throughout the floors.

  • parents with young kids because one owner said there's no child lock and the buttons are at child height, so kids can trigger sounds and turn lights on/off.

  • buyers who rely on stable WiFi after power outages because a commenter said the unit loses WiFi after power goes out and requires a hard reset and re-adding to the app.

  • people who want quiet operation at low speeds because one owner reported an annoying hum/whine at low speeds.

We've had this for two years. Very happy with this. It is sensitive. When my pet cat passes by, it automatically kicks on. When my son farts, the machine detects it right the way. In average, we replaced the filters once a year. We use this 24x7 in winter and during the summer when our AC is on. You don't use it when you have your windows open.

The aftermarkets aren't as good. No doubt about it. Less air flow because they have fewer pleats. I counted seven less pleats one time, and five less another time. In large rooms, or especially a whole house, this makes a difference. You will see dust in the air next to windows when you get further away from the filter.
This last time I spent the money on Coway filters and can say I am happier. ultimately worth the price. I can tell the air is 'lighter' when I change the filters. More so than when I'd change out to aftermarket. The carbon also lasts a LOT longer. There is a smell in the air when the carbon stops working. It's distinct. The carbon in the Coways easily last twice as long. But this isn't a deal breaker. As the carbon in the Coways don't last as long as the HEPA part either. You can give them a good shake, to extend the life of the carbon. Doing so introduces new cracks and crevices within the pieces of carbon for the air to filter through. Be sure the vacuum it first. Shake with the carbon part of the filter pointed down. And vacuum again afterwards. Because you will get carbon dust, it's just little pieces of charcoal, all in your HEPA, reducing the lifespan.
Helpful info. Thanks

Tempting price. Thinking about geting one for my downstairs, which is roughly 1,200 square feet. Or would it make sense to get two air purifiers like Winix 5520 so their aren't any dead zones. Or some other version where I could purchase two for roughly the same price. But 46% definitely has my spidysenses going off!

I like this unit, but one thing that I realized too late... there is no child lock feature, and these buttons are at child height, and they make fun sounds turn lights on and off.
We discovered that recently when one of my nieces and nephew were here. Luckily they couldn't really break anything on it, aside from just change the settings temporarly or reset the prefiler cleaner timer.

I will add, we've had our 400 model for 7 years and leave it on 24/7 (usually on low- until kids change it lol) and it's still working just fine. I'm very tempted to get another one.

How often do you run them?
I have 2 in my home as well. One on the second floor and one in the finished basement. Both run 24/7 and work great.

I bought this in 2023 on a deal. It started to make unpleasant noises in 10 months. I got a replacement unit and this one has been fine 23 months in.

I purchased two of these. They have been awesome. One downstairs and one upstairs. I purchased them through my HSA account when they went on sale.

Plenty of youtube videos testing filter longevity, flow rates, particle metrics, etc. for a wide range of filter types. These coway filters are pretty robust. If you live in a relatively clean environment and clean/care for these filters properly they will last years with minimal performance drop (flow) while maintaining near 100% particulate capture. The only real reason to be replacing the filter is to get fresh charcoal odor control. 3-5 years is more than good enough.

How much better is this compared to the older model Coway AP-2015F? My house is very dusty but that price tag keeps me away from this.
If you're looking for a good value to performance, look into CR boxes. My son and I designed and 3d printed a nice one that uses two Costco 3M 2200 20x30 filters ($10-12/ea). CADR is better than this (but has no carbon) and cost like $70 to build and uses reeeeeally quiet, efficient PC fans that cost about $4/ea.

My cat likes to jump on mine and manages to change the settings with her little paws.

Have you ever tried aftermarket filters? I'm overdue to replace my filters and tempted to get aftermarket as it's less than a 3rd of the price right now vs the genuine. I noticed on the genuine filter [amazon.com] there are a nice handful of recent reviews complaining about a weird odor.
The aftermarket filters are trash. They don't even compare to the genuine filters. And the genuine filters are so expensive. I sold my 400s and just bought a couple Winix from Costco. This was a solid purifier though, just too expensive for upkeep for a single unit.

How much of a difference do these make as far as dust? I'm in a very dusty house
I recommend keeping windows fully closed when using any air filtration system. Crack them at most if fresh air exchange is absolutely needed. This prevents the unit's fan from drawing in unfiltered outdoor pollutants through its intake, rendering the filter ineffective at purifying your indoor environment.
