The Coway Airmega 400 is a large, smart HEPA purifier that moves a lot of air and does a strong job cutting dust, odors, and airborne particles. It works well in bigger spaces, can run around the clock, and the auto sensor and scheduled high speed mode help it collect plenty of debris on the prefilter. Long term durability looks solid, with multiple reports of years of trouble free use. The main drawbacks are expensive replacement filters, especially for the pair, plus occasional complaints about chemical smells, noise, WiFi setup hassles, and no child lock. A capable whole home style purifier if upkeep cost and size are acceptable.

Common Questions (5)

  • It works well in a bedroom or main living area, but it is not ideal for moving air between floors or across a whole house. A common recommendation is one unit per floor or multiple smaller units for large, separated spaces.

  • The HEPA/carbon filter set is commonly replaced about once a year, though some owners stretch it to 9 months to a year with regular pre-filter cleaning. In cleaner homes, genuine filters may last 3-5 years with minimal performance drop, while the carbon portion usually wears out sooner than the HEPA media.

  • Aftermarket filters are widely used and can work fine in the Airmega 400, with several owners reporting no noticeable difference in day-to-day performance. The main caveat is that some off-brand filters may have fewer pleats or less carbon, and using third-party filters can affect warranty service if a problem is traced to them.

  • It can be quiet on low, but some units develop a hum or whine at low speeds and get noisy above low. Replacement filters have also been reported to smell chemical-like, including OEM filters, so checking recent filter reviews before buying is useful.

  • The WiFi/app setup can be finicky, and after a power outage it may lose connectivity and need a hard reset and re-adding to the app. The non-WiFi version avoids that hassle, while Alexa control is also available on the smart model.

I have two of these in my house, and they are amazing air purifiers. Replacement filters last a year or longer, but are expensive if you don't get them on sale.

Have you ever tried aftermarket filters? I'm overdue to replace my filters and tempted to get aftermarket as it's less than a 3rd of the price right now vs the genuine. I noticed on the genuine filter [amazon.com] there are a nice handful of recent reviews complaining about a weird odor.

I also have two in my house one for bedroom, one for main room and work well at circulating the air once an hour as advertised. filters are expensive. I vac the pre-filter screen but HEPA I replace twice a year. Keep in mind air sucks into both sides so there are 2x the filters to buy, they come in a pack of 2.

I have one and use aftermarket filters for some cost savings. I can say I don't notice a difference so it works for me

As everyone says, the replacement filter cost is expensive. I've bought the official filters for as low as $70, but they're as mush as $115 if not on sale. That's the cost total for the pair of filters you have to replace.

Reviews for the offbrand types tend to notice differences in weight that indicate there's less carbon in the carbon filter, or other differences

We've had an airmega 400 for about 6 years and it still works great. We also use the aftermarket replacement filters and can't tell a difference (FWIW we don't buy the cheapest and are from some "filter" company on Amz). Even if the OEM are better and have more carbon, I don't care when the non-OEM are half the cost. When I clean the filter screens, I also vacuum the outfacing part of the filter where the little bits of carbon are.

Crazy. I just looked at one of these in my local thrift shop, Saint Vincent DePaul. Brand spankin new, in box, original filters still wrapped in their plastic bags. They have a price tag on it $125. I'll take this as a sign. I should go retrieve it.

How much of a difference do these make as far as dust? I'm in a very dusty house

How often do you run them?

I have two of these 400 series (along with a Pro X and (4) 200Ms running all the time in my house (high air pollution where we live), and have no problem using non-OEM filters as replacements. They're fine. I seriously doubt that Coway makes their own HEPA filters; so they're likely sourcing them from China, too. Carbon pellets/filters don't last as long as the HEPA filters anyway, so you're only removing VOCs and smells for the first part of your filter life anyway. Like others have noted, just clean your filter screens often, vacuum or dust off the HEPA filter on the carbon side, and you'll get 9mos to a year.

I like this unit, but one thing that I realized too late... there is no child lock feature, and these buttons are at child height, and they make fun sounds turn lights on and off.

Keep in mind there are multiple versions of the Airmega that look just like this. They aren't all $650 MSRP. I have a 300 series that works well, but it looks almost the exact same as the 400.

It'd significantly reduce it, but you'll have to change the filters a lot more than the recommended amount

It will make a big difference if 1.) you remember that the dust must be airborne, and 2.) you have reasonable expectations for it's reach into bedrooms or different floors. You'll probably want to start off cleaning the prefilter every two weeks. If you manually dust your house, generating a lot of airborne dust in the process, this unit will help capture the fine particles that otherwise just settle backdown eventually. It's made a big difference in our allergies. But we still have to vacuum and dust. These things are expensive, no doubt. But they do work.

Do you mind sharing a link to the filters you get?

I purchased this, and like my smaller coway iPod-looking-units for the bedrooms will get non-oem filters, but want decent ones even if they aren't the cheapest.

Thanks!
