We've had an airmega 400 for about 6 years and it still works great. We also use the aftermarket replacement filters and can't tell a difference (FWIW we don't buy the cheapest and are from some "filter" company on Amz). Even if the OEM are better and have more carbon, I don't care when the non-OEM are half the cost. When I clean the filter screens, I also vacuum the outfacing part of the filter where the little bits of carbon are.

I like this unit, but one thing that I realized too late... there is no child lock feature, and these buttons are at child height, and they make fun sounds turn lights on and off.

The aftermarkets aren't as good. No doubt about it. Less air flow because they have fewer pleats. I counted seven less pleats one time, and five less another time. In large rooms, or especially a whole house, this makes a difference. You will see dust in the air next to windows when you get further away from the filter.
This last time I spent the money on Coway filters and can say I am happier. ultimately worth the price. I can tell the air is 'lighter' when I change the filters. More so than when I'd change out to aftermarket. The carbon also lasts a LOT longer. There is a smell in the air when the carbon stops working. It's distinct. The carbon in the Coways easily last twice as long. But this isn't a deal breaker. As the carbon in the Coways don't last as long as the HEPA part either. You can give them a good shake, to extend the life of the carbon. Doing so introduces new cracks and crevices within the pieces of carbon for the air to filter through. Be sure the vacuum it first. Shake with the carbon part of the filter pointed down. And vacuum again afterwards. Because you will get carbon dust, it's just little pieces of charcoal, all in your HEPA, reducing the lifespan.

The Coway Airmega 400 is a large, smart HEPA purifier that moves a lot of air and does a strong job cutting dust, odors, and airborne particles. It works well in bigger spaces, can run around the clock, and the auto sensor and scheduled high speed mode help it collect plenty of debris on the prefilter. Long term durability looks solid, with multiple reports of years of trouble free use. The main drawbacks are expensive replacement filters, especially for the pair, plus occasional complaints about chemical smells, noise, WiFi setup hassles, and no child lock. A capable whole home style purifier if upkeep cost and size are acceptable.

  • The pre-filter screen can be vacuumed regularly to support ongoing maintenance and airflow.

    SensibleMeal1392darren_fsl

  • The purifier can keep running for years with filter replacements timed by indicator lights.

    JollyHose932ChukkyS

  • The purifier can clear visible dust haze in less than a day after setup.

    mremmert23

  • The unit can reduce dust and hair by capturing debris on the pre-filters while nearby surfaces stay cleaner.

    dwayned

  • Replacement filters can develop a strong chemical odor, and some users stop using the Coway because of it.

    Clint3200Fauxnoh

  • Replacement filters can be expensive, with genuine options ranging roughly from $70 on sale up to about $115 without sale.

    elnino2783

  • WiFi and app setup can be a hassle, and power outages can require a hard reset and re-adding to the app.

    BrainDoc

  • The unit can be noisy at speeds above low, and low speeds may not move much air.

Anyone have this? How does it compare to Winix for cleaning and filter costs?

This is legit. I have so many air filters and this one has impressed me right away. I don't credit the refill cost - it works

I have my furnaces in the basement of a 100+ year old house. Dusty, rocks, a lot of sut all over. Would this be a good option to put in the basement to improve air that is sent throughout the house?

How much of a difference do these make as far as dust? I'm in a very dusty house
Incredible difference. The trick is to set a schedule if you can. I have the 400S, so it has a smartphone app. Right after we leave the house in the morning both if mine run at the highest setting for ½ hr. I find incredible amounts of dust and hair on the cleanable and reusable pre-filters, and the floor beneath itis also dusty but my surfaces like tables and windowsills are not at all dusty!

Just received mine a few days ago. This thing is amazing. We recently moved into a new apartment and there was this haze visually in the air from the dust and this cleaned it up in less then a day! Would highly recommend.

Does the filter smell? A few people in this thread complained of chemical smell. Did they get a lemon, or is it actually common?

Love this thing. We keep it in the bedroom and it is silent enough to sleep next to. Have had it for about 4 years and it's still going strong. No fan bearing noise even after this long of it continuously running. Have it on auto during the day and low at night.

My only gripe is that it beeps multiple times at the schedule change and you can't silence it. We just make it 9pm and 9am to ensure we're awake when it beeps multiple times
