I like this unit, but one thing that I realized too late... there is no child lock feature, and these buttons are at child height, and they make fun sounds turn lights on and off.

The aftermarkets aren't as good. No doubt about it. Less air flow because they have fewer pleats. I counted seven less pleats one time, and five less another time. In large rooms, or especially a whole house, this makes a difference. You will see dust in the air next to windows when you get further away from the filter.
This last time I spent the money on Coway filters and can say I am happier. ultimately worth the price. I can tell the air is 'lighter' when I change the filters. More so than when I'd change out to aftermarket. The carbon also lasts a LOT longer. There is a smell in the air when the carbon stops working. It's distinct. The carbon in the Coways easily last twice as long. But this isn't a deal breaker. As the carbon in the Coways don't last as long as the HEPA part either. You can give them a good shake, to extend the life of the carbon. Doing so introduces new cracks and crevices within the pieces of carbon for the air to filter through. Be sure the vacuum it first. Shake with the carbon part of the filter pointed down. And vacuum again afterwards. Because you will get carbon dust, it's just little pieces of charcoal, all in your HEPA, reducing the lifespan.

I have two of these 400 series (along with a Pro X and (4) 200Ms running all the time in my house (high air pollution where we live), and have no problem using non-OEM filters as replacements. They're fine. I seriously doubt that Coway makes their own HEPA filters; so they're likely sourcing them from China, too. Carbon pellets/filters don't last as long as the HEPA filters anyway, so you're only removing VOCs and smells for the first part of your filter life anyway. Like others have noted, just clean your filter screens often, vacuum or dust off the HEPA filter on the carbon side, and you'll get 9mos to a year.

Ehh lot of folks commenting on 3rd party filters but even wirecutter wrote : "We tested two popular third-party replacement-filter sets for the Mighty, made by Cabiclean and Durabasics, and neither gave off any noticeable odor. They performed almost identically to the genuine Coway filter in our smoke tests, so we're confident in recommending them. One caveat: Coway told us that "if a problem is identified using a third-party filter, the customer does not receive warranty service."

We've had this for two years. Very happy with this. It is sensitive. When my pet cat passes by, it automatically kicks on. When my son farts, the machine detects it right the way. In average, we replaced the filters once a year. We use this 24x7 in winter and during the summer when our AC is on. You don't use it when you have your windows open.
If it detects farts, it would run continuously for me

Tempting price. Thinking about geting one for my downstairs, which is roughly 1,200 square feet. Or would it make sense to get two air purifiers like Winix 5520 so their aren't any dead zones. Or some other version where I could purchase two for roughly the same price. But 46% definitely has my spidysenses going off!
I bought the 400 and regret it. I should have gotten two of the smaller ones instead. The 400 is noisy on any speed above low, at which it doesn't move much air. I have a 200 in the bedroom that runs on speed 2 continuously and it collects much more dust than the 400. I have a couple of Winix as well, but they start making fan bearing noises after a while. The 5500 (first purifier I ever bought about 6 years ago) has lasted much longer than the 2 AM80's I bought at Costco. One of them got thrown out already and was replaced by the Airmega 200.

This or blue air?
I returned 2 blue air to Costco because the awful smell from their filters was giving us headaches! They looked nice and were quiet. But both had that terrible chemical smell that didn't go away after a week.

Get the Levoit 600s whole house WiFi unit...I spent hours (winter time and bored) researching filters and deciding on it because of filter replacement cost and effectiveness. 2 years later all three have had no issues, bought one for my sister as well.

If you're going to go expensive, go Austin Air. Hepa + charcoal filters. Best on the market IMHO. filters last 5 years.

All the replacement filters for these (even OEM) stink like chemicals.I gave up and got rid of the Coway and went with another brand.Check the reviews. Many people notice the terrible smell of the replacements.
We received ours yesterday and I can attest, it does smell like chemicals. We're currently running it in a closed room with the window open.

I have the winix also and the aftermarket filters have been cheap and great! Costs me $25 annual for a pack of these filters.

I do like the unit on this deal. If filter cost is high, I won't bite. I'm fine with upfront cost for a nice unit, but the filter cost is what'll add up.
I have a winix c535 is this replacement filter good for it because some reviews on amazon say it's too thick so you can't close the machine... have you had that problem? Also is there any chemical smell from the replacement filtered? c

How does this compare to the Winix air purifiers from Costco?
