Just a heads up for anyone who might match my profile. That said, the game is so cheap that it's worth buying on sale even if you're hesitant. $7 is a good price for even a couple hours of entertainment, and it's going to an indie developer.
Community Reviews
Balatro is a highly addictive poker roguelike that works especially well as a mobile time killer, with runs that can disappear during a commute, flight, or waiting room. The card and joker combos, engine building strategy, and rearranging jokers before each hand make it feel deep and satisfying, and the paid version avoids ads. A major update with new content is coming soon, and the game is available for $6.99 on both iOS and Android. The main drawback is the lack of cross save or progress syncing between platforms, which makes switching devices a hassle.

You'd be a moron not to pay the MSRP on thus great product!
IMO individual games isn't a big of a deal because each run isn't a huge time commitment; it's not a huge beef to have to finish it on the same device. But not being able to sync overall progress is a bummer.
What I'm trying to convey - you can play this in a way that's reasonably challenging but still fun, even if you don't want to dig too deep into learning the meta strategies and stuff. In that way, despite being a complex game, it is pretty accessible and enjoyable even at a casual level. Personally, a lot of times I play easier modes because I just wanna unwind and have a bit of fun - not ride the struggle bus (ride the bus reference iykyk). There are a bunch of roguelikes I've played where this isn't an option :3
If you do want to up your game (pun), Balatro University on YT is a great channel to grow as a player. One thing that helped me is often I would have dismissed a joker as absolutely stupid and dumb, then he would drop a video about how that very same joker is goated.
As pointed out by a few people, there isn't cross-saving between platforms for your progress on unlocking achievements and in-game stuff. What I do is my "main" save is Steam -- so if I am pushing for unlocking the harder achievements, I play there. I still play the mobile version a lot just for fun as a time killer. So the cross-platform stuff doesn't effectively matter to me that much (though it would be nice)
You get some cards, you pick out the best possible 5 card hand with them. Better hands are worth more points. Then at various times there are cards that increase, multiply, or occasionally decrease the points you get so you have to keep those in mind.
How is that fun and addictive? Just making poker hands out of a set of cards over and over and over to try to get higher point totals?
I feel like I might as well be watching people be given a set of letters, arrange them in alphabetical order to score points, and see them rave about how great it is. What am I missing?

Super Mario Bros? Just walk to the right to jump on a flag?
Tetris? Just fit some blocks together.
Balatro's fun is probably more experienced just by playing it, but you're trying to craft the best set of hands based on the jokers you have and trying to reach the score target before your hands run out. You have to shift your jokers around for maximum value and to find out how best combination to play. There are other cards that affect your score, plus there's a boss battle every three hands (if you don't skip). It's mainly a game where you don't know if your hand will score enough value until it does, and achieving that score is just fun to watch and really bumps the old serotonin levels.
It's well worth seven bucks.
