This ROG Xbox Ally bundle is best viewed as a portable Windows gaming handheld for on the go play, especially if you want an out of the box setup for Game Pass, Steam, emulation, and cloud streaming. The built in grips and Xbox like ergonomics stand out, and the 7 inch form factor is praised for portability and comfort. The bundle value is helped by the included games and Costco return policy. The main knocks are the underpowered Z2 A chip, the small screen for first person shooters, and a messy game redemption process that can require AMD verification steps.
buyers who want to avoid the risk of discontinued/refurb units because multiple commenters frame this Costco purchase as a safer, no-nonsense way to try a current handheld with the ability to return it rather than hunting used/discontinued alternatives.
people who want a simple out-of-the-box Windows/Xbox-style handheld for on-the-go gaming because the deal is positioned as an easy solution and the ergonomics are called out as better than the Steam Deck (less hand cramping, closer to an Xbox controller).
handheld buyers who mainly want to play Game Pass/Xbox-style games and don't need top-tier AAA performance because one commenter says it's an affordable option for GamePass games and that Windows won't make it faster, so the value is in having a flexible handheld rather than chasing ultra settings.
people who want a portable "complement" device rather than their only gaming system because one commenter says if you're not trying to play brand-new AAA on ultra settings, the $490 bundle is fair and works well as a handheld add-on.
emulation-focused handheld shoppers because commenters say the device is "excellent" for emulation and also flexible enough to install Bazzite/SteamOS options or dual-boot if you want a SteamOS-like experience.
Fortnite players who are shopping specifically for a handheld that can run it natively because commenters point out that SteamOS is a "no go on Fortnite," and they also describe Fortnite as a deal-breaker for Steam Deck compatibility.
buyers who rely on the included game redemption working smoothly on-device because commenters report the AMD verification/redemption process is a "mess," with the verification tool failing repeatedly and requiring multiple attempts.
people who want to use the handheld for competitive online play over spotty connections because commenters warn that streaming/remote play over hotspot or public Wi‑Fi is generally not an option and that Fortnite is a "forget about it" case due to intolerable lag/disconnects.
buyers who are sensitive to comfort and screen-size fatigue for text-heavy games because one commenter says Destiny 2 runs smoothly but the screen is too small, leading to fatigue from tiny text.
buyers who expect premium performance on a small 7-inch display because commenters argue that if you want a "premium" high-fidelity experience, a 7-inch screen isn't the way to go and that mobile units leave a lot to be desired.
people who are considering the Z2A specifically because multiple commenters say to "stay away" from the Z2A, calling it not worth the price and slower than the Z2 GO, with recommendations to look at Z1 Extreme/Z2 Extreme instead.

It's a farking mess honestly
Would I buy it? No. But there's so few good devices that are affordable right now, this might be a decent pickup for some people who are not looking for much. If you're into emulation, this device is going to be excellent. The one thing I will say about this device is that it's very flexible. You can install Bazzite if you want a SteamOS experience, you can dual boot with Windows, you can install SteamOS itself (not officially supported).
People spend a lot of time talking about how bad it is without acknowledging what it can do well. It's a great streamer for Xbox, Playstation, GamePass, GeForce Now, and Boosteroid, among others. It's great for emulation and it's great for Steam Deck levels of gameplay.
Good luck!
can this play Luna games from Amazon?
For the verification tool to work, adjust your system clock to current time/date and then run it. Should work.
I ended up buying it and am trying to find out more about this now. Gaming handhelds are completely left out of the return policy literature. I've found a number of posts on the web that say gaming consoles are not part of the 90 day limit on returns, but they are usually referring to PS5 or something undeniably a 'console'. Costco could say that this item is classified as an 'electronics' so it'd be 90 days. Someone on Reddit claiming to be a supervisor at Costco said the Legion Go is actually electronics and so it's 90 days. I'd still insist this is a gaming console but it's not a deal killer for me right now. At worst I've got 90 days to see if I really like this thing enough to keep it, or if I find a Go for the same price or less and would like that instead.
Looking at all the valuable input in the thread made me realize it's the easiest, safest, no-nonsense solution for me. I don't want to worry about refurbished or used discontinued units. Gaming handhelds are starting to become harder to find deals on - or availability. The Steam Deck is already sold out completely (I don't want to be restricted to Steam OS, anyway, but that's besides this point). I don't want to fumble around with streaming to see how acceptable it is or isn't. The higher model ROG Ally X just saw a $200 increase in Japan in the last 48 hours. The Legion Go pricing also looks like it's going up. So yeah, this looks like a pretty good deal to me right now and it couldn't be from a better store. If nothing else I've got 90 days to solidify or regret it. Thanks for all the insight and happy gaming!
