This ROG Xbox Ally bundle is best viewed as a portable Windows gaming handheld for on the go play, especially if you want an out of the box setup for Game Pass, Steam, emulation, and cloud streaming. The built in grips and Xbox like ergonomics stand out, and the 7 inch form factor is praised for portability and comfort. The bundle value is helped by the included games and Costco return policy. The main knocks are the underpowered Z2 A chip, the small screen for first person shooters, and a messy game redemption process that can require AMD verification steps.
The bundle can serve as an out-of-the-box Windows or Xbox-style handheld for on-the-go gaming.
Costco purchase can reduce risk by allowing returns if the handheld does not meet expectations.
Ergonomics can feel closer to an Xbox controller and may reduce hand cramping versus Steam Deck.
The device can be flexible for different setups, including emulation and streaming services.
Fortnite compatibility can be a deal breaker because Steam OS can prevent playing Fortnite and possibly other games.
The included game redemption process can be overly complicated and may require an AMD verification tool that fails repeatedly.
Remote play and streaming can suffer from input lag and connection issues, and Fortnite is described as a no-go over weak networks.
The Z2A model can be underpowered and may be slower than the Z2 GO, making it a poor value choice.

There's a lot of shade being thrown around about the Z2a chip, and if you're looking to use this as your main and only gaming device, then sure splurge for something more expensive.
This is a handheld though, for me personally I'm not trying to play brand new AAA games on ultra settings. This is not the form factor for that.
So my 2 cents is if you're looking at handhelds as a complement to your current setups, then this is a pretty good option at this price.
IF you (people not you specifically) want a "premium" gaming experience then a 7" screen is not the way to go. Yes it's dockable but these mobile units leave a lot to be desired. Everyone says steam deck, but playing games on that vs a pc, there is a LOT that is left out graphically, and it would be the same with this. What this is good for is on the go gaming, people complaining about super high fidelity for the most part have no idea what they're talking about other than reading the spec sheet.
For the price this is a fair deal. especially considering the landscape right now.
Not to mention, even on the keyshops, that is $100-125 worth of games (assuming those exact games have value to you).
FWIW, I am really surprised those are STEAM KEYS, not Xbox for Windows (or whatever the service is called this week).

I'd love to get the best bang for my buck, and while it does appear the complaints against this screen or the processor are true, some people just want portable gaming. I have no idea why the processor here is worse than its predecessor but the old Ally is discontinued so buying one used, especially with the SD card errors, is just a little too risky. The current Ally X is just way too much if you're looking at this as a deal (or not). The Steam Deck just went out of stock this past week for new units, and the last refurb sale was the first week of the new year. There's no telling when they'll have enough stock to sell again and if the prices will change. Even then, it's SteamOS and you can't play certain games without tinkering or workarounds, so you'd have to see if games you're interested in are on that list.
So from what I can see, options in this price range for a portable gaming system that you don't have to tinker with (installing other OSs or do something like game streaming), has the least limitations on games I could potentially play, is not a refurb, is not discontinued, is this deal right here or a Lenovo Legion Go Z1E. And I JUST missed the LeGO Z1E for $430 on Jan 28. I figure it's Costco and a safe buy to see if I could make do with this or not.

You are aware its very easy to buy a handheld android based game system and just stream from Xbox right? I do it all the time. Internet connectivity obviously isnt an issue for you since you keep mentioning Fortnite Destiny and Helldivers, so why not just play via streaming?
If you are dead set on a handheld PC Steam Deck truly is the most versatile option, but if tinkering is too much effort for you then you have to ask yourself if any handheld PC is really worth it to you?
This allows you to pair the same Xbox controller to both your Xbox and your phone and just double tap the button to alternate between the two. Unless you are using a very old Xbox controller from the early Xbox One days this should work for almost any smartphone.
No, I'm not aware. If I'm looking for a way to play Fortnite or Helldivers 2 (owned digitally on Xbox) on the couch or bed at home, or out in some building while I'm hanging out and waiting for the kids at practice or lessions or something, how does someone go about doing this if not buying and using something like this Ally or a Legion Go? My home internet is 500 gb but realistically am getting between 100 to 200 speed at the console due to congestion or something else I haven't figured out. I kind of threw away the idea of streaming at that point.
You can test it right now if you have a smartphone with Bluetooth and an Xbox controller..... even the controller is optional if you wanna suffer through touch controls.
One thing I will note: Handhelds like the Retroid Pocket seem to do this a lot better than my Samsung Galaxy. I have enough input lag when playing on the Galaxy/Xbox controller that something like Pinball FX is borderline unplayable, but it works nearly flawlessly on my other Android handhelds. Probably because the Galaxy is running a bunch of other stuff in the background, has a much lower refresh rate (I have one of the really cheap budget models), and isn't using the built in controls of something like a Retroid.
But pinball is pretty niche. Most games that dont require as much precision (such as Halo, Forza, and various Doom games) play just fine with my phone/controller.

Helldivers might be okay lag-wise over decent 5G, but you could constantly get booted for mild hiccups in connection. So no go for most users. For games like Fortnite, forget about it. Having even lackluster pings (especially variable) is likely a deal killer unless you like getting killed within seconds of the beginning of a match. And the same goes for getting auto booted for minor disconnects. Most competitive games are even more intolerant of poor connections because that can be a method using for exploits and also impacts server quality for everyone. Not as bad as in the Quake 2 days where the high ping guy would get kicked as a rule, but it still matters.

TLDR: I don't think it would be a good option for you (for the games mentioned at least) but might be worth a try just for fun
