This ROG Xbox Ally bundle is best viewed as a portable Windows gaming handheld for on the go play, especially if you want an out of the box setup for Game Pass, Steam, emulation, and cloud streaming. The built in grips and Xbox like ergonomics stand out, and the 7 inch form factor is praised for portability and comfort. The bundle value is helped by the included games and Costco return policy. The main knocks are the underpowered Z2 A chip, the small screen for first person shooters, and a messy game redemption process that can require AMD verification steps.

The Z1E, and ROG Ally X (without Xbox branding) is the older discontinued models. Performance wise all these models are pretty close. This one performs below these discontinued models and are closer to performance to the lower end model of the ROG Ally Z1.
I own the Z1E and paid $450 for it brand new January of last year. However, I wish I got the ROG Ally X for $700 due to the eGPU connector and extra 8GB RAM. I like the form factor better than the newest Xbox ROG Ally X, but I value portability over comfort.
This isn't a bad deal for this device considering the alternative is used or pay a lot more. We just don't have a lot of better options at this point in time.
I was in this situation as I wanted the ability to connect to thunderbolt eGPU as that is only on the Ally X model and the Xbox models. I couldn't go sell the Ally Z1 extreme since I paid quite a bit for it, did the battery mod and upgraded the nvme to 2TB. I'd lose a lot of money selling it and buying an Ally X.
I later found out the XG Mobile connection is much much faster than thunderbolt or even Oculink (although, it's proprietary). I found that some dude reverse engineered the XG Mobile connection last year but I didn't care since it was a DIY make your own PCB board and then you have to flash the custom firmware. But today, if you look at the github page (search xg mobile github, it's by Osy), you can join a discord and people are doing group buys so the PCB boards are cheap. I recently got a custom lite board already flashed (the hardest thing to do to make the dock) by someone who bought a bunch of boards. if you can find the discord join link on the github, I suggest you do so if you are remotely interested in making your own XG mobile. I only had to pay for the expensive XG mobile cable to attach to the lite board. The dude I bought the lite board version 0.61 already flashed the bunch of boards and he still has some to sell. You just need that XG cable, the lite board, a power supply, and your own choice of GPU (highly suggest Nvidia for the most minimal issues). after all the hook ups on the board, i attach the cable to the Ally Z1 extreme. installed the nvidia drivers and just had to run a file to get around the error43 in windows and the stupid thing worked. paid for about $300 for both the lite board and XG cable. I had a spare PSU and then bought a used 3080 on offerup for $300. The cheapest XG Mobile setup ever! You can play boosted graphics on the Ally itself or when connecting a 144hz 1440p gaming monitor!
yeah-- idk how they chose these games LOL
