Do you know of any reputable source that thinks the prices are going back to that anytime soon? Or does it seem like prices will continue to go the other way?

Not justifying this price but take a look at storage (and RAM) prices in the last 2-3 months due to AI/Datacenters prebuying everything. A 1 TB SSD going for $50 in Oct is now selling for $150-200. Prices most likely wont drop for a 2-3 years.

you are going to wait 2-3 years before they come down in price.

As long as AI companies is buying up ram and SSDs, consumer products will be pricey for years to come.

LOL, these were $129 a couple months ago, and I saw them on sale for $109 last holiday season. Then they went up to $149 this holiday season, and now they're $169? Just say no.

Not until the datacenter bubble inevitably bursts. And it's not just solid state storage and RAM - WD just reported that their entire hard drive production capacity for 2026 has been bought up by them. You can't even find refurb drive deals anymore.

If you are likely to need one soon and the prices are not going down soon, would you rather buy it now or wait as the prices go up?

I looked for it at my local Costco and my jaw hit the floor -- it's now a whopping $219.99. I swear it was $169 when I was there a few days ago.

If you're in actual need of storage or memory right now, you're boned - if you need it, you need it, and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. I'm glad I grabbed some clearance SSDs at Walmart (2TB WD Blues, 2TB WD Blacks) before everything shot up 400%. I'm praying that I don't have more than one drive fail in my NAS over the next couple years, 'cause I only bought one spare 12TB from goharddrive when they were briefly $75.
