This 100 foot 12 gauge Southwire cord is built for heavy duty use, with full copper conductors and solid plug connectors that stay barely warm under a 1800 watt heater load. The 12 gauge rating makes it the right class for higher draw jobs like heaters and jump houses, and the 15 amp label appears tied to the plug style and cord length rather than the wire itself. The tradeoff is weight, with the cord landing around 14 pounds and feeling very heavy. A sturdy long run when durability matters more than portability.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The 100 ft 12/3 cord is reported to be very heavy, with one estimate putting it at about 14 lb. It is also described as staying barely warm under an 1800W heater load.

  • It is used for high-load jobs such as an 1800W heater and jump houses, and 12-gauge is preferred over thinner 16-gauge cords for those loads. The practical reason is that thinner cords can trip breakers under heavy draw.

  • The 15A rating is likely tied to the plug and receptacle compatibility, not the wire gauge alone. 12-gauge wire can carry 20A, but this cord's plug reportedly will not fit a 20A receptacle.

  • Yes, it is described as 100% copper with solid plug connectors. That is contrasted with cheaper CCA cords that use copper-clad aluminum and thinner ends.

  • If you do not need the full 100 ft, two 50 ft cords can cost about the same or less at Costco on sale. That can be more practical when shorter runs are enough.

I have this. It's well-built and barely feels warm when attached to my 1800 watt heater. But dang, it's HEAVY!

I have several of these that I've bought over the years on sales. There's nothing worse than going to some other dood's house and watching his jump houses blow his breaker because he's running 16ga Christmas light extension cords to them.

Have a 12ga extension cord. Be a man.

12 but its 15 amps? why isnt it 20 amps? does it have to do with the length of the cord?

I was going to say...... 12/3 100ft has got to be heavy. Sure enough 14 lb.

Probably just the plug type. 20A plugs have that extra "notch"... 12ga wiring itself can carry 20A.

Costco sells 2, 50' for about the same price (sometimes less on sale) if that is more useful to some.

Amperage capacity is %100 dependent on gauge + length

Here's a quick chart... lots of them out there.

12 Gauge – 25ft/20A – 50ft/15A – 100ft/15A
14 Gauge – 25ft/15A – 50ft/13A – 100ft/10A
16 Gauge – 25ft/13A – 50ft/10A – 100ft/7A

The plug will not fit a 20 A receptacle, so that's probably what they're indicating.

hahah.. yeah.... and material and quality.
full copper, with solid plug connectors is different than CCA (cooper clad aluminum) with thin folded aluminum ends.

Exactly exactly. Just pointing out that gauge and length aren't the only variables.
