Do I actually have to open the box and activate the watch, I'd rather keep it in original package and use as a gift…what happens if I don't activate?

They keep telling me that once the system is updated to show it was delivered, I'll be able to activate, but we'll have to see (currently have an escalation ticket open with support, but I'm not holding my breath)

Apparently there was an issue with our AmEx after our order went through, Metro tried to charge me 5 times and then credited me back. When we called in to fix it, the rep said "oh there was a glitch, I will credit your account" and just gave us a credit back for the $42. Now the reps are saying they can't activate our line because we never paid for the initial order - they want me to return the watch, but said they can't send me a return label since we should have kept the one in the original box.
Tempted to just throw in the towel, use the watch via BT, and just start over with a new account.

If you order a tablet, that needs to be activated before the watch (or so a rep told me).
And if you get an error w/ watch after payment, you need to call them and have them do it manually. That may possibly be somewhat painful, but they can do it.

But there is a workaround. From this link https://xdaforums.com/t/galaxy-wa...e.4532989/ start at step 6 and ignore everything above. I did this myself on a tmobile plan phone. Step 10 will have the link to the QR code.

Once it all goes through it will want to install Metro related apps, but I didn't see anything added.
I was able to send a text from the watch to my tmobile phone and confirm mobile data, but can't seem to receive a text reply back. Better than nothing.
