The Dyson AM09 is a compact hot and cool heater and fan that stands out most for fast, effective heat and kid friendly design with no exposed heating element. It is also useful for white noise and keeping bedrooms warm, and the 23 inch height makes it easy to place in smaller spaces. The main cautions are reliability and refurb condition, with reports of H2 errors, units failing after about a year, and some refurbished examples arriving scratched or dirty. It is a solid compact heater if you want quick warmth and can live with the maintenance and warranty risk.

Common Questions (5)

  • Some units have lasted 4-7 years with no issues, but others have failed after about a year or shown H2 error codes that stop the heat function. A warranty is important because refurbished units can arrive worn or develop overheating-related faults.

  • This AM09 fan/heater is filter-less and does not use a HEPA filter. Maintenance is mainly blowing dust out of the airflow holes in the base, so there is no 6-month filter replacement cost.

  • No, this listing is for a fan/heater only. It does not have app-based preheating or air purification; those features are on Dyson HP models, which can look similar.

  • The heat function works quickly and can fill a room fast, making it the stronger mode on this unit. It is described as less impressive as a fan than as a heater.

  • It is considered kid-friendly because there is no exposed heating element. It is also used in bedrooms for white noise and to keep rooms warm.

For what it's worth, I picked up a "certified refurbished" Dyson fan just like this a couple years ago, and it was all beat to hell. There were scratches and scuffs all over it, and the sticker on the power cable had carpet and hair all stuck to it. It was super nasty, and the only thing they would do is let me return it for a refund. I'll never trust another refurbished (or possibly new) product from them again after the back and forth I had with their customer service.

They don't have filters. Not sure where you read that, but seeing as how I've owned two of these for just short of a decade now and taken the things apart myself... I can tell you that there are no filters in this Dyson model. The only maintenance I've had to do was to take a can of air and blow dust away from the airflow holes in the base of the unit... but the unit itself is filter-less.

IMO, these units function about the same refurbished as they do brand new in most cases. Unless there was some kind of really major defect that required it to be refurb'd... the unit itself holds up pretty well. In my usage, both of the units had H2 errors after constant usage. Those H2 errors were a little iffy at times... the unit usually prefers to be plugged directly into a wall power outlet as opposed to an extension cord, and it also seems like if the dust is covering specific components, that can generate an H2 error. When it has that H2 error, the heat portion fails to work. When it doesn't have that error, its a fantastic unit that I think is well worth 170 bucks.

For me, the only issue with this purchase is that because of the potential for that H2 error, when you combine that with the age of this model... I need a warranty. You'd either have to provide a warranty, or I'd have to consider a different model (one less prone to the overheating error).

I had one of these and it lasted about a year before it stopped coming on. I found Dyson Refurbs not to be the best. Additional warranty would probably not be a bad idea.

You can buy generic ones that fit and work like genuine ones.

Just remember this is a fan, not an air purifier. The Dyson HP models are air purifiers. They look pretty similar and I have seen people get confused.

The Dyson HP Air purifiers are rated even worse for durability and does not have heating features.

Dyson heaters tend to break down with random H2 codes. Would not recommend.
