If people arent fond of this deal, whats a good way to start bonsai? I have some indoor hours plants and wanted to try my hand at a bonsai that I could potentially hand down one day.

I actually got one of the bonsai kits 2 out of the 5 grew. However I was able to transfer the multiple plans from the 2 that did grow. Ended up with 4 plants

Not by doing something like this, is extremely difficult to grow a tree from seed, and thats just to get a seedling, not even the bonsai process.
Your best bet, buy an already grown one and learn to care for it. Next step would be air layering to make your own (Google it), not starting from seed.

I got one of these kits in the past and nothing happened. I'd be wary about any kit at this point.

Kinda bold to suggest that others are simply not following the directions...

It's not being bold as they were just providing their experience with this product. Many people think they follow directions while not monitoring important parameters like temperature, temperature fluctuations, amount of light, soil moisture control, etc. It can be tough to get many types of plants to grow from seeds when you "follow directions" but don't realize you may be sabotaging the process. Many (maybe most) reviewers show the kit placed on a window sill. This is a major problem in most houses as that is where the temperature fluctuates the most. Also, seeds don't need sunshine/light to sprout (germinate). People "think" they are helping the seeds while actually preventing them from sprouting.

It's bold because the commentator knows absolutely nothing of how exactly the other folks operated, the degree to which they followed the instructions or their overall knowledge of plants and growing.

You're right, it's a complex process. All the more reason to be careful about assuming exactly what people did. Simply stating they "Just have to follow the directions" is assumptive and condescending.
