the tplink deco series is marketed as a "household and lifestyle" appliance (hence the name DECO). this line of products differ from tplinks other routers because its focused on ease of use and simple one click setups for the average technophobe consumer. an active cloud account is required to mitigate setup and changes because deployment is dynamic. they locked out more advanced features and direct access to the router and everything is meant to be managed easily via your phone from anywhere. this is by design for ease of use, not because they want to "steal yo data." if you do a search on SD there are a few other tplink routers, namely the Archer (one mesh) line or the Omada, neither requires mandatory cloud account or setup.
tplink split itself into 2 corporate entities and distanced themselves from one another. tplink systems inc. is a registered US company headquartered in Irvine, california. tplink also aggressively relocated their manufacturing facilities from china to vietnam so they wont be subject to chinese government mandates and data regulations. if you're worried about data privacy, there are many more products that you currently use that are at higher risk from companies that aren't taking such an aggressive stance to remove themselves from china.

while every router is at risk, tplink is one of the safer ones according to actual statistics. tplink does pose a higher risk due to their massive market share (ie: one vulnerability would expose many more routers because there are just so many tplink routers out there) but this increased risk is systemic, not due to negligence.
i think confirmation bias plays a large part here, or maybe some people want to feel important or relevant by parroting misinformation without understanding it first. this kind of narrative creates an anti-competitive environment that translates to higher prices and less innovation for slickdealers. if you hear tplink being namedropped a lot in politics, well its just grandstanding. they need sacrificial lambs to manufacture outrage like all demagogues do.

The Deco XE75 is a Wi Fi 6E tri band mesh system aimed at easy whole home coverage and simple phone based setup. It works well for typical home tasks like Wi Fi extension, DDNS, port forwarding, static IPs, and blocking internet access for devices. The main tradeoff is a stripped down app only interface with no web console and limited advanced networking options. Parental controls are especially weak, with poor paid controls and tight website whitelisting limits. A practical pick if you mainly want straightforward mesh coverage rather than deep customization.
home users who mainly want Wi‑Fi extension and don't mind a limited feature set because commenters say the Deco works well for extending Wi‑Fi but "lacks a ton of features."
people who want simple home networking features like DDNS, port forwarding, blocking internet for certain devices, and static IPs because commenters report those functions work fine on Deco for typical home use.
parents who just need a basic "No Internet" device grouping because one commenter says they only use the system for that simple grouping and found it useful.
buyers who prefer phone/cloud-managed setup and fewer advanced options because the Deco line is described as intentionally designed for easy one-click setup for "the average technophobe consumer," with management meant to be done via phone from anywhere.
parents who specifically need strong parental controls because multiple commenters call the parental controls "abysmal," "horrible," and say you're better off using separate upstream parental-control hardware.
techy users who want advanced segmentation like multiple segregated vLANs with tagging because commenters say that kind of setup is not supported and "this is not the device for you."
people who want to whitelist domains or manage more than a small number of filtered sites because one commenter says you cannot whitelist domains and cannot whitelist more than 30 total websites.
buyers who want advanced configuration via a web interface because commenters report it's app-only (no web interface/advanced features) and changes can require a reboot, which they find annoying.
buyers comparing against much cheaper past mesh deals because one commenter questions the value by comparing it to a prior Linksys Wi‑Fi 6E 3‑unit mesh deal for $74.

FYI for anyone who does not need the bulb and also doesn't want to register for another account lol
Edit: just noticed it's the XE75 Pro which adds 2x 2.5Ghz ports bundle that's 15% back with Amazon visa.

I do DDNS, port forwarding, block internet access to certain devices, static IPs, etc with my Deco's and they have been working fine. If I wanted to do more, I'd be looking at a different class of devices.
