This is a 40Gbps M.2 NVMe enclosure aimed at fast, stable USB4 and Thunderbolt storage. It is described as very sturdy, and the dedicated enclosure has been rock solid for Mac mini M4 use, including boot drive duty and speeds over 6,000 MBps with a good NVMe. The main cautions are heat, since it can run hotter than expected, and compatibility, since it needs a Thunderbolt or USB4 port to perform properly. It also sits close to past OWC pricing, so value depends on how much that stability matters.

Common Questions (4)

  • It can be rock solid on a Mac mini M4 and avoid the random disconnects seen with some combo hubs. It has also been used as a boot drive for months without glitches, which makes it a safer choice when stability matters.

  • It works over Thunderbolt or USB4 ports and connects via PCIe lanes. A slower USB-C port may not deliver the expected performance or may not work as intended.

  • With a proper Samsung NVMe, it can exceed 6,000 MB/s and even outperform an internal Mac Studio M4 Max drive. The drive choice matters a lot for reaching those speeds.

  • It is built very sturdily, but it can run hotter than expected and the heat sink is described as not especially effective. That matters if you plan to keep it under sustained load.

Only, @max did not provide any proof of it. I don't know if it was really the same deal (BTW the link is a different model OWC vs UGREE) or it was a price mistake, or had any shipping cost.
If the OWC 1M2 was $40, it was really a good price enough to doubt it. I can understand if UGREEN was $40.
Fair enough. But I wasn't addressing the accuracy of the response by @amax, but only the ridiculous "time machine" response we see all too often in this forum when someone mentions a prior price, and dismisses it as irrelevant on that basis alone. Perhaps it was inaccurate (beats me), and if so, let's respond to @amax on that basis.

Will these do firmware updates on nvmes?
It should as long as you have it connected to a thunderbolt or USB4 port, where it connects via PCIe lanes. If you have it connected to a slower port no.

I have the ACASIS 40Gb enclosure and it's been rock solid with my Mac Mini m4. I even used is as the main (boot) drive for 6 months since the internal one was only 256GB. Not a glitch.

Great to hear. I went through 3 or 4 combo hubs with NVMe slots before giving up and going with the dedicated one. I wasn't using it to boot, but they constantly disconnected.

There are definitely cheaper ones. These all use 1 of 2 chips.
