EDIT Feb 28 Price change
Physics: Vacuum keeps the lid quite secure when cold as long as the yellow button is down. It's a good thing not a design defect that it's a struggle to open the lid right out of the fridge if one fails to lift the plug to vent. Apparently some users don't understand physics.
In any sealed vessel when the contents warm air expands. The elastic band is included for travel to prevent the lid from popping open from pressure increase as the contents warm.
The silicone seal can be removed from the lid for cleaning. Parchment paper can be placed between the food and the lid.. Models with Ti metal lids are available albeit at a much higher cost and with bulky clips.
