Not a fan of Mountain Hardwear's matte "stretch" outer. It shows stains way too well. I have this version minus the hoodie. I have to wash it quite often. Even if I brush up against a car, all the road salt transfers and it's difficult to clean. This is opposed to their traditional polyester outer (like North Face)… that material is awesome; cleans well and still looks new after years of use. Just food for thought.

Genuinely an awesome hoodie, but not quite as low as they've gone and not great color options 😭 Columbia Delta Ridge II for just $62 should be arriving any day

Yeah I did notice that after I commented I looked back. Wondering how the thermal foil thing on the inside of the Columbia actually has any impact or not.

Bear in mind that the outer fabric of the stretchdown jackets is pretty heavy/unpackable so you wouldn't necessarily want to use it in a situation where you really wanted high fill power anyway.
They're really comfortable so I think you can think of them as a good alternative to a ski parka or something for daily use but I don't think they're actually practical for hiking or stuff like that where you might want to take them off and put them in a pack.
Honestly they're so unpackable that I'm not sure there's even that much point being down rather than synthetic but I guess it does reduce the overall weight when you're wearing them and when they're on sale they're probably good for the price as long as you understand what you're actually getting.

I have this jacket as well, in the olive green color. Love the style, but also agree with some of the other comments. It's definitely heavier and not as packable as many other down / puffy jackets. That being said, this is a great price if you like either of the colors. Would recommend as long as you don't care about packability. Also, fit is true to size.

I've never owned any of the Mountain Hardware stuff but from what I've read I thought they were supposed to be better quality than Columbia, is that not the case?

I'd say 60-65% of my closet is Mountain Hardwear. Never had a button pop, a zipper break, or any material wear through. Essentially anything that isn't a dress shirt or slacks for work, but I wear MHW pants more than not. The winter stuff is great, but the summertime/sun materials and clothes are excellent and often get overlooked and are important and innovative for sun protection and humidity control. Their pants are wonderful for traveling, as are their casual dress shirts. I can't say enough good things about the company and it's products.

While Columbia bought MHW to be it's high-end/luxury brand in 2003, they are joined only in supporting corporate functions, with production, materials, and design teams being completely separate. MWH is a materials developer, and usually retains exclusivity for 3-4 years before passing tech down to Columbia. Columbia helps with logistics and fulfillment, and corporate holdings are paid through Columbia. MHW operates as it's own, though under the Columbia umbrella. Columbia owns Sorel and Prana too.

As for quality, if you hold a Columbia coat/jacket/pants next to a similar MHW coat/jacket/pants, you can immediately see and feel the difference. The stitching is more durable, often surged where Columbia is single-stitched. The touch is noticeable on most because of higher thread counts and durable finishes. They put softer material where it touches the skin and gussets where things bend. And MHW just makes more technical clothing with more useful/fun/cool features that doesn't get picked up by Columbia so as to keep prices in line with their markets. MHW makes everyday non-tech products too, like regular cotton t-shirts and such, but they're best known for rugged active wear.

I've bought the majority of my MHW stuff from links here on SD since 2015. I'm at the point now where I just shop for the *really* cool, unique or innovative things. There wasn't anything for me in this month's sale, so you might just want to stick around and check things out until you find something you like. Join their loyalty club for perks and free shipping.

By the way, people knocking the jacket above...the stretchdown isn't made to be packable or even to be lightweight, it's just the latest iteration of their standard down jacket in a different weave pattern.

I think it's cool that every Mountain Hardwear product that has real down inside comes with a little certification tag that tells you where the down inside your jacket came from. All their down products are certified under the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), administered by Textile Exchange.

So the tag has a little QR code printed on it that lets you track specifically, down to the farm level, where the the fill has passed a documented chain-of-custody process with welfare audits from farm through finished garment. Kinda cool, for those who care about such things.

Has anyone found other items the discount code works for? Tried a few items to no avail.
