Seems like one book that would be best to have in peperback. Or at least an extra physical copy along with the ebook 😁

I agree, but the ideal scenario would be to practice this stuff before hand and not need it when SHTF.

There's so much in this book, you'd never be able to learn half of it.

Cool book but very dumb concept to have it electronically.

It's the opposite of dumb. "Survival" Kindles/eReaders hooked up to a small solar charger have been a thing for over a decade. Highly portable with more than enough memory to have access to a plethora of survival references (with the power of keyword search because it's digital), week's long battery life, and can be fully charged in a day if it's clear and sunny. Newer eReaders are even waterproof rated now, which makes them perfect for the field in your Bug-Out-Bag. Yes, you should learn the most important things before being in a survival scenario, but you can't know everything, and having a digital library of survival information at your fingertips is one of the most useful survival tools you can have.

That said, thanks OP. Going to add this to my eReader. This is a great reference.

And a hand crank to power the charger.

How much kit you planning on carrying when bugging out if you also include a full scale ereader? FWIW, I don't disagree with your mindset of having digital references as printed books are even more bulky (and even less weatherproof) but if you are really planning for such an event your phone can be your ereaders, nav device, comms, etc. No reason to carry multiple devices unless you just want a backup, then a $20 old android could likely serve that purpose. I'm not going to demand a 10" screen when trying to figure out which berry might be safe to eat.

Another thought, does Kindle ever require to be connected to the internet to check or verify licenses / DRM / subscriptions? I honestly don't know but that might be worth looking into. Otherwise PDF type references may be a better alternative. I personally have a bunch in my phone already and are much easier to share between 3rd parties as well. I doubt you can send a DRM managed ebook to another user via Bluetooth but PDF's are super simple to share and require no specialized apps to access, don't care about phone brand, etc.

Maybe they would come up with some rugged ebook reader with built-in solar panel at the back panel bundling with this book.

An e-reader is a super light addition to one's kit in proportion to the utility it provides all things considered. Plus, the battery life/consumption totally beats a phone. Obviously, a phone is a necessary tool for comms/nav to get oneself out of a survival scenario, but that is all the more reason to offload the reading/reference to a much more energy efficient device (ereader) and save the phone's battery for those tasks instead. And yes, backup is key. One is none. Having the survival ebooks on both phone and ereader is the way to go.

As far as internet connectivity. DRM-free (or DRM-removed, very easy to do) ebooks sideloaded on an e-reader with programs like Calibre makes it completely unnecessary to connect to the internet to use it. I have a Kobo and it always works when offline (even the DRMed books). I don't know what Kindle's requirements are for internet connection to use ebooks.

There are kits you can get that do exactly this. That's a great idea for the manufacturer to build it themselves, or make a sleep cover that has the solar panel built in.

Summed up in 4 words: "Shelter fire water food". You can build from there.

Good reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/sh...m_Know_How
Paperback version is out of print, used is $14.
Purchased on Apple Books because I can family share with 4 adults (compared to Kindle's 2 adults + non-adult kids).
Downloaded it and hope it stays on my device. Now to pack some extra phone charging batteries!
The chapter on first aid is probably the most helpful right after a disaster.
