This ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 is a heavy but highly serviceable mobile workstation built for CAD, BIM, AI, and on site work. The four DDR5 slots, two PCIe 4.0 NVMe slots, and removable GPU daughter board make it unusually upgradeable, and the 64GB memory plus RTX 3500 Ada pricing looks strong for the class. The display is praised for accuracy and wide gamut, and Lenovo support and durability get strong marks. Main tradeoffs are the weight, the 60Hz panel, and the lack of Ethernet, with GPU swaps likely limited to Lenovo boards. A solid fit if portability means transport, not light carry.

  • Engineers running CAD, GIS, or financial models need a stable mobile workstation because the pro GPU is dead stable and the chassis is built for repairability and support.

  • Consultants and contractors visiting customer sites need a portable workstation because it can run all day with a big screen while still being transportable.

  • BIM and TEVIT modelers need an on-the-go workstation because the GPU and memory make mobile modeling practical.

  • AI and Linux workstation builders need a serviceable laptop because it supports four DIMM slots, upgradeable graphics, and certified native Ubuntu or RHEL.

  • Travelers who want a light 16-inch laptop should skip it because it weighs like a tank and the included charger makes backpack carry less manageable.

  • Gamers chasing high-refresh competitive play should look elsewhere because the screen is only 60Hz and the GPU is TGP-limited compared with gaming laptops.

  • People who need built-in Ethernet for workstation setups should avoid it because this model has no Ethernet jack.

  • Users expecting easy GPU swaps across brands should not count on it because BIOS compatibility can block daughterboard replacements.

RTX 3500 Ada supposedly is a cut down 4070 desktop chip and is close to 5070 laptop performance. 64GB DDR5 is around $600, so you get the rest of the laptop for $1160 which seems decent.

Do not buy this unless you need a tank its weighs like one.

I have a P16v, it's of a similar weight. As long as you don't carry the included charger, or get a lighter weight 135W or 100W charger from Lenovo, it's totally manageable in a backpack.

Terrible display compared with this.

If you care about weight you shouldn't be looking at 16" laptops that have a discrete GPU anyway.

i'm going to play the "i wish" game.
first, i realize this isn't newest top of the line. i understand the use case for a laptop like this - i'm an engineer.
i wish:
  • it had a rtxa5000.
  • it had more than 64gb memory - memory is expensive now days even if this can be updated.
  • wifi 7
  • i would like to see an i9 version
  • it was a tiny bit cheaper.
  • edit: oh yeah no ethernet at least 2.5gbe or even 10gbe. this would be nice.
i think we are a year away from seeing better deals on this vintage of laptops.
btw has anyone seen the prices for the latest dell workstation laptops with the blackwell chips in them - upwards of $8000!!!! i remember the days where macs were criticized for being way too expensive - macs are now the value alternative to windows. even at the low end - best mini pc out there for bang for buck - mac mini!
bt 5.4

Workstation SDs like this P16 sort of have no home. It is like a used Mercedes S class. People with money wont want it (they could make more money by spending more). People without money cant afford it (or are otherwise wasting money on unneeded features). It COULD be one of those ultra durable and reliable machines if you are ok with the weight, but if you are a pro, you want more speed (since time = $), and if you are not a pro, you probably want a 165 hz screen and/or faster graphics especially at this price. The GPU in this machine would only be a deal if we were in a crypto-adjacent shortage, where GPUs of all sorts were basically inaccessible.

Thinkpads will also never have cooling that is as robust as in the gaming machines (the GPUs are also, for that double whammy, usually TGP limited, because pro GPUs emphasize stability over outright speed...manufacturers also have free reign to implement their own Max-Q level restricions which are super YMMV...The Legion 5, for example, is 130w, while the Legion 5 Pro was 140w...for the exact same GPU.

Gone but glad I got one. I bought a DGX spark last year and have been running my local AI projects with it while learning the NVidia stack beyond just CUDA. It has been very useful, but I've been working from a high spec'd terrible machine Galaxy Book3 Ultra, 16" w/ i9 processor, 32gb ram and a 4070. I was drawn to the Samsung ecosystem of phone, tablet, and PC with a smooth premium feel with massive discounts. Even after turning off the CPU boost, I've experienced nothing but problems when trying to drive 2 - 4k monitors. Also, for AI/ML, I like my Linux with a side of windows not windows with a slide of Linux (WSL). Gaming laptops are not workstations, thin and sleek profiles of most laptop bodies are just a recipe for problems. This Lenovo keeps me in the NVida Stack, certified native Ubuntu (or RH), newer models are twice as much, and Apple, Dell and HP are 3x as much and don't deliver what my DGX Spark can do. For me, this will be a win, price is a slick deal given the market and if RAM prices stabilize in a few years, this machine was built to be serviced and upgraded (4 DIMM slots in 2026 is AMAZING)! I don't mind the weight as long as the feel is better than basic which and while nothing is built like it used to be, it is a Lenovo. Score!

It's only one generation back. It's not that outdated, especially in the mobile workstation space. When you compare that to a P16 Gen with a comparable configuration, you're looking at around $4K to get something with a 12 gig Blackwell card.
that is good info! Thank you!

"Gpu outdated for $1700+??" is an interesting way to communicate curiosity. If you, heart of hearts, write this way from a place of genuine curiosity, then I strongly recommend a course or two in written communication.

As for learning about the computer world from SD...you probably "know" as many myths as you do real things. Thats a lot of unlearning you'll want to do.
lol ok buddy. always a karen that likes to argues with everyone haha
