Me personally i would just get a lightly used m4 for only a little bit more. Especially with m5 out u can find a lot of good deals on used m4. Better design more ram faster ect

This isn't a deal, this is normal MSRP. They literally just launched it.

Good callout. There is also only one monitor output which may not be an issue for many users but would be a dealbreaker for some.

Seriously considering a fanless laptop and need one right now, and it seems like MacBooks are my best bet.
How much are we talking about for discounted M4 Air 256G, will it be even close to ~$500-600?

M1 air for 350 or this
Absolutely --at least in the near term. Was able to pick up a perfect walmart open box m1 air for $308 2 weeks ago, so new (or practically new) units are still available -- (for now). Scratch and dinged stuff will be available forever --there were a lot of these sold.

What is cool is the neo doesn't currently have a >8GB ram option --so the M1 should in theory should have a fairly long support life --at least it won't be dropped for ram size.

(8gb works fine for a bunch of use cases, but is a bit light on others --recommend holding out for 16gb or higher if you expect to be doing more demanding stuff a lot of the time).

Anyway, cool to have options that don't cost historically typical apple money.

8GB RAM isn't even enough for basic web browsing these days thanks to bloated web frameworks and browser sandboxing, especially with React & Chrome. The SSD better have a higher TBW/DWPD rating to handle the constant swapping.Apple has learned the hard way about this and that's why they finally released the base model Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM in 2024.
i had m1 with only 8gb ram, handled web browsing, media streaming, office apps, etc just fine, experienced no lag. got rid of it because 13.3 in screen was too small for my bad eyes.

Crazy we got ipads with M chips and Macbooks with A chips
they wanted a basic, entry level Mac laptop for non-power users who value portability.

I have an 8 gb m1 macbook that works fine for most daily use. From what I can tell the chip on this is generally comparable.

I think it's a good product that I would need to buy, and this will sell like hotcakes to schools.

Would someone planning to output to 2 monitors be the type of person to look at a Neo?

I cannot justify this at $500 with only 8gb of memory.
