The SSD probably has died since then due to the constant swapping.
For those who buy the MacBook Neo, make sure you get the 512 GB version and do over-provisioning to help it last a little longer.
I haven't heard of any widespread issues with SSD's dying on any of the Macs, even with 8GB of RAM.

The intended audience here is those who were considering getting a Chromebook or a cheap entry-level Windows laptop. Not those running LLMs, doing a bunch of photo editing, development work etc.
My wife has had a base M1 MacBook Air for 4-5 years now and it does everything she needs it to do. Single core on this is significantly better then the M1, with better battery life and longer support to boot.
If you need more power, then you know you'll need more power and this isn't the device for you.
