Me personally i would just get a lightly used m4 for only a little bit more. Especially with m5 out u can find a lot of good deals on used m4. Better design more ram faster ect

Good callout. There is also only one monitor output which may not be an issue for many users but would be a dealbreaker for some.
It's a dealbreaker for power users, who aren't the target demographic for the Neo

I see the argument, but for these purposes, why not get a $250-$300 windows laptop instead? Do people really love to stay with Apple ecosystem and willing to pay double for browsing/word processing? I guess, maybe, but that's still $600 if you are not a student.
$300 windows laptops are cheap plastic trash and won't get anywhere near 16 hours of battery life. The A18 Pro in this will also almost certainly run circles around whatever Celeron/Pentium in the cheapest laptops. It should outperform most of the lower level i3 and Ryzen 3 chips and competes well with the i5 and Ryzen 5 chips at a much lower power draw.

Even if you don't use the EDU loophole, I'm sure there will be sales on this frequently to bring it down to the $499-549 price point

Ruined the name Neo putting it on a budget laptop. Why apple why? Nobody asked for this.
Similar to the Airbus A320NEO's it means "New Engine Option"... The current M processor laptops will now be referred to as a MacBook Air/Pro CEO "Current Engine Option."

8GB RAM in the big 2026 is criminal. But with the current RAM prices I guess it's justified lol
Yep, 32GB DDR5 RAM kit now cost $400+ lol, even with 8GB, the cost is close to $100 now which is insane

given how bad windows is, even if I was a gamer, I'd honestly just have this for browsing the internet and use the windows machine for the games. this handles 90% of most peoples use cases. my dad (who happens to be a retired windows pc manufacturing exec) even went to mac, and all he does is like run turbotax and browse google finance for his stocks and do email on his macbook air m4. this can easily run that.

great move by apple to get people into the ecosystem. people will buy this, and upgrade to airs/pros etc in 3-4 years

Any good legit sites for that? I've been looking around but can't seem to find anything that's trustworthy.

Apple finally admitted that 8GB RAM is not enough no matter how optimized macOS is and released the base model Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM.
Now they're backtracking that stance due to the recent DRAM price hikes. šŸ˜‚
šŸ™„šŸ™„šŸ™„šŸ™„ 8 GB works perfectly even at fairly heavy use in my MacBook air. These aren't windows machines lol

Very good callout - honestly the storage is already probably "worth" it (it's an absurd they charge this much, but 256 vs 512 makes a big difference when the OS takes a good chunk already).

The touchid to me makes it a no brainer, unless you have an apple watch already and use that for unlock the ability to use touchid is so so nice.

Just canceled my pre-order. You must have a touchID and the backlit keyboard. You will regret everytime you use it. The price is good though.

8GB RAM isn't even enough for basic web browsing these days thanks to bloated web frameworks and browser sandboxing, especially with React & Chrome. Plus, the GPU and NPU are sharing some of that memory as Macs come with Unified Memory.
The SSD better have a higher TBW/DWPD rating to handle the constant swapping.
Apple has learned the hard way about this and that's why they finally released the base model Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM in 2024.
I bet the only reason the MacBook Neo came with 8GB of RAM is due to the skyrocketing DRAM costs.
You are wrong Smilie
