Square screen is perfect for Game Boy, Gameboy Color, NES, SNES, and PICO-8. Anything beyond that and you're going to have black bars at the top and bottom. Controls are good and it's super comfortable.

Is there an option to turn off the lights in the analog sticks?

Why would the square screen be "perfect" for NES and SNES? Aren't those both 4:3 systems? Well, technically 8:7 but none one on earth had a 8:7 screen back in the day so would have played both exclusively on a 4:3 CRT unless you were an engineer at Nintendo....but they probably used 4:3 screens for testing.

*not saying square is bad, simply not native to now most people would have experienced these systems unless they just happened to have a square TV...which I doubt.

The best of Anbernic's H700 handhelds. Sure the screen is square, but it is also the largest size and largest resolution on an H700 device. Would have bought one if I did not already have an RG 34XXSP and Trimui Hammer.

I have a different handheld in this family of H700 Anbernic devices. One thing to be aware of is that Anbernic makes this same device across multiple screen sizes and dimensions as well as layouts. You can have a horizontal or vertical, a smaller screen or a large screen (~4") with either square like this or a normal 4:3. You can have with analog sticks or without. There are like 6+ devices that use the same guts as this, just with those different options. So really pick the one that appeals to you the most, whether that's a vertical Gameboy like one or a horizontal with analog sticks.

I recommend using Knulli as the operating system as it looks very good and has many built in features that are helpful. MuOS is the other major 3rd party operating system on these devices.

Art style on some games obviously assumes 8:7, though you're right that most assume 4:3. It's not as black and white as "these were played on 4:3 TVs." Yes, that's accurate, but some artists made the assumption of square pixels and so 8:7 matches that style more than 4:3. (Plus the difference in aspect ratio is moderate enough that the slight "stretch" even on games that assume 4:3 might not be a problem for some people.)

Love mine, flash it to Knulli or MuOS for a better experience IMO, and you're good.

From a purist standpoint you are probably right if we were basing it completely off theory. From a purist standpoint, in practice, or "how I played it as a kid"...4:3 would have been the only way to experience it. Also I cannot imagine the artists not realizing what the final output resolution would have been even if they were designing it for a 8:7 system. Unless they were totally oblivious to the find end use....which could have been the case?

This is all of course subjective and completely up to the beholder which one would be right for them.

Purists probably don't play their games on something like this. Even a 4:3 LCD would likely not be that ideal from that perspective because they aren't perfect at emulating rectangular pixels. So if you remove the purist perspective and are willing to experiment with equating the 8:7 pixel ratio as an 8:7 aspect ratio it can be a pretty interesting experience with some games. Maybe not the "intended" way of playing, but again, we're not being purists here. Also, I don't own this device but own one with the same screen (Powkiddy RGB20SX) and the letterboxing to hit 4:3 isn't too bad regardless. Still solid enough for 4:3 even if you are wanting to stick with an accurate aspect ratio.
