From my research, this is just a P1 g8 with GeForce RTX GPUs instead of the standard P1 RTX PRO GPU offerings. Previously, the P1 (like g7) could come with either GeForce RTX or RTX PRO offerings, the T1g g8 was introduced to differentiate the lack of workstation class GPU, hence there is no T1g g1, g2, etc. This T1g g8 model is actually the first of its branding.
This is a Thinkpad counterpart of the Yoga Pro 9i, which is a fantastic laptop for its tandem OLED 3200x2000 screen (the best screen available in the market for content consumption at the moment IMO, due to its higher resolution than typical 2.8K OLEDs, extremely high brightness), great speakers, great keyboard, reasonable weight, etc. The differences are:
While Yoga Pro 9i has very good keyboard, T1g should have even better keyboard.
Screen-wise, Yoga Pro 9i has advantage, as T1g has matte coating which seems to add some graininess (per notebookcheck.com)
Yoga Pro 9i uses the slim-tip charger (comes with 170w). T1g comes with 140W usb-c charger, so it is more convenient (but max GPU performance may suffer due to the reduced power). Another advantage of T1g is it has a USB-c port on the right hand side, which is convenient for charging.
Camera seems to be the same
T1g comes with the fingerprint reader, which is a plus.
Speakers seem to be on par.
Overall, I think T1g is better than Yoga Pro 9i, except the matte screen and maybe maximum performance due to the power charger difference (this is my guess). For me, content consumption is very important so I will still go with Yoga Pro 9i, I wish they come out with glossy screen version of T1g.
Thanks for sharing this deal, This is a discontinued model, extended warranties are an extra $255 for 5-years. Are extended warranties helpful anyone has experience using extended warranty on ThinkPad?
Yeah, they are very helpful if you get the accidental one. They replaced half of my thinkpad x1 extreme after a fall down some concrete stairs under warranty. I've had the battery on on my P16 gen 1 replaced twice under warranty.
I always buy their extended accidental warrant on laptops. I have dogs, and i travel alot. So they see alot of abuse. Its definitely nice to have for a laptop.
If you cannot really afford to replace the laptop. I would recommend the warranty. I replace mine every 3 or so years. So i get their maximum for 3 years. I cannot afford to spend $3k+ to replace what i have.

Yeah, I have. USB Ports fried 3 times. I think I had the premier onsite warranty. A tech came out all 3 times to my office the next day and replaced the motherboard. Well worth the money for the onsite repairs. Just be sure you remember your password because the PIN won't work the first time after mobo replacement.. poor tech had to put the old mobo back in so I could reset the password
does anyone know how long these deals usually last (don't have the money to buy it right now, but would like to when I have the cash relatively soon)
Also, how is the battery life on this model?

Add an alert, deals come and go and will always be a new one.
battery likely suck if you run 5070 on full power. Mine 5090 mobile only lasts an hour if I run it full blast. idle it will run hours but that's a useless stat.

It depends on what you will run on it...
I think my old Lenovo W540 would switch between the Nvidia GPU and onboard Intel processor depending on whats needed to save battery.
Do new laptops with a Nvidia GPU work the same way? I'd rather use the regular onboard processor most of the time, and pretend have the Nvidia kick in automatically when doing local AI playground tasks (note: i don't do gaming, but id be interested in a laptop that is strong for AI development).
