I also have these. I put them on my keys, and in my wallet— things that are occasionally misplaced at home. The sound function works just fine for this purpose without the Bluetooth proximity function that AirTags have. I think the claimed increase in battery life over AirTags is because they don't update as frequently.
I also put a couple inside of ladders because my team works in a city, and I may need to know what jobsite the ladders are on. AirTags are expensive for this purpose and it's annoying to change out the batteries every few months.
for my e-bike and primary toolkit, which are more valuable, I use AirTags with the speaker disabled.
As for how long do they actually last? I can't confirm or deny as I've only had these for 4 months, but they're working for me so far, and at this price point, I'll probably buy more.

What's going on with your AirTags? Is some kind of cold or heat affecting the batteries? Mine typically get the advertised year of battery life.
Without precision finding, it will show a dot on your house. With precision finding it will lead you to you which pocket in which jacket in which closet you left your keys.
