The bottom holds up in the elements.
I've had a beehive sitting on one for over 5 years.
I turned one upside down and set the hive on top of it.
It's the lid that doesn't hold up...

I've found that most 27-gallon storage bins will stack more-or-less interchangeably. But I wouldn't count on lids working interchangeably.
