REI Co op Members Day centers on a rare 20 percent off one full price item or one online outlet item, with free shipping and a few useful exceptions. The coupon appears to work on some hard to discount gear like the Garmin bike radar and Brompton branded bicycle accessories, and it can make outlet clearance, including Marmot items, land near direct brand pricing. It also lines up well with bike tune up savings at REI Co op Shop locations. Kayaks are excluded, and some prices were raised after the coupon went live, so the best value depends on the item.

Common Questions (4)

  • The Garmin bike radar is coupon eligible, but Garmin watches and beacons are not. Garmin is otherwise usually excluded, so the radar is the notable exception.

  • Yes. REI's returns policy allows returns even after the item has been used, which makes it possible to buy the membership and backpack now and return them later if needed.

  • Yes, kayaks are excluded from the deal. The coupon does not apply to them.

  • The online Outlet coupon can apply to clearance items, and Marmot clearance pricing can end up about the same as buying directly from Marmot after the 20% off. That makes the outlet discount useful mainly when the item is already marked down.

This is so sad to see a bedrock of a local institution be infiltrated by corporate ladder climbers and greed.
The last CEO who actually cared about the outdoors was Sally Jewell. She spent 17 years at REI before becoming CEO, doubled sales to $2B, then left to become Secretary of the Interior. After that she ran The Nature Conservancy. Her whole life was conservation.
After her? Victoria's Secret COO Jerry Stritzke. A luxury handbag guy. He got forced out over an ethics scandal after 5 years.
Then Eric Artz, former Urban Outfitters CFO. He racked up $600M+ in losses, killed the Experiences program (the guided trips and outdoor classes that actually got people outside), endorsed Doug Burgum for Interior Secretary, who is now trying to drill on public lands, and spent his time replacing long-time REI people with execs from Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Chipotle, and Target. He stacked the board with people from ExxonMobil, McKinsey, and Procter & Gamble. Then "retired" after destroying the legacy.
The new CEO is Mary Beth Laughton. Career path is McKinsey to Nike to Sephora to Ahleta back to Nike and finally to REI. Averages about 2 years per company. No conservation background whatsoever.
And it's not just CEOs. Artz hired Cameron Janes from Amazon as COO, dude already bounced to T-Mobile, then DoorDash. Board members went from making under $4K a year to $125K. When 115,000 members voted to reject all three board candidates last year, the bylaws let the remaining board just appoint replacements anyway. They picked Nike's former COO.
The co-op is now a resume stop between Fortune 500 gigs and no one in charge has any reason to care if it survives. Not sure if can be fixed and brought back to it's roots.

But this "$30 bonus card on membership" is not currently available, right? I just want to make sure.

How often do they have this "20% off full priced item" coupon?

I am traveling in July and want to buy a backpack. I need to become REI member first but additional $30 bonus card would be nice.

EDIT:
I found out you have to spend $50+ in addition to the membership fee in one transaction to be able to earn $30 bonus card. Somebody told me REI is having a $30 bonus card promo on membership starting 3/24, one day after 20% off full price item coupon expires.
Buy the membership and the backpack now. If you're not satisfied after your trip, you can return both.

Really? I can return the item even after I used it?

Yes https://www.rei.com/help/returns
Thanks for the link. I wish the local REI store is nearby to my house, so that I can check on the backpack size in person.

If you like Brompton-branded bicycle accessories, REI is the only place to get a discount on those items.
Yes indeed. I wonder if its the same for Park Tools? I think I've spent the majority of my 20% off purchases on Brompton and PT items. It's too bad I don't see anything I could use this time around.
