Wouldn't this be a major tripping hazard? These seem to stick out from the steps quite a lot.

I agree they seem potentially problematic. Ideally they would be mounted flushed but that looks tricky to do, and that's assuming the surface doesn't become slippery when wet.

In my experience with these TYPE of lights, the thing preventing them from being great are the batteries. So, I usually try to find ones that use standard rechargeable cells (e.g. AA or AAA equivalent) and change out the cells before installation. Plus I take them down once a year or so and recharge the batteries in a regular household charger.

I've got a few sets of these style of lights going well for 3-4 years with the above method.
